Childcare Facilities in Slum Areas in India

Flag of IndiaThe Ministry of Women and Child Development is implementing the ?Rajiv Gandhi National Cr?che Scheme for the Children of Working Mothers?, as a Central Sector Scheme, which provides day care facilities to children, including those in slum areas, in the age group of 0-6 years, of families with monthly income of less than Rs.12,000.

In addition to being a safe space for the children, the cr?ches provide services such as supplementary nutrition, pre-school education and emergency health care etc. The Scheme is implemented through the Central Social Welfare Board (CSWB), which is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Women & Child Development and the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW), which is a national level voluntary organization.

Apart from the above, there are various Legislations such as The Factories Act, 1948, The Plantations Labour Act, 1951, The Contract Labour Act, 1970 and The Mines Act, 1952, which make it incumbent upon the employer to provide cr?che facilities for children of women workers.

This was stated by Smt. Krishna Tirath, Minister for Women and Child Development in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
