List: No love for 'fiscal cliff,' 'spoiler alert'

DETROIT (AP) ? Spoiler alert: This story contains words and phrases that some people want to ban from the English language. "Spoiler alert" is among them. So are "kick the can down the road," ''trending" and "bucket list."

A dirty dozen have landed on the 38th annual List of Words to be Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. The nonbinding, tongue-in-cheek decree released Monday by northern Michigan's Lake Superior State University is based on nominations submitted from the United States, Canada and beyond.

"Spoiler alert," the seemingly thoughtful way to warn readers or viewers about looming references to a key plot point in a film or TV show, nevertheless passed its use-by date for many, including Joseph Foly, of Fremont, Calif. He argued in his submission the phrase is "used as an obnoxious way to show one has trivial information and is about to use it, no matter what."

At the risk of further offense, here's another spoiler alert: The phrase receiving the most nominations this year is "fiscal cliff," banished because of its overuse by media outlets when describing across-the-board federal tax increases and spending cuts that economists say could harm the economy in the new year without congressional action.

"You can't turn on the news without hearing this," said Christopher Loiselle, of Midland, Mich., in his submission. "I'm equally worried about the River of Debt and Mountain of Despair."

Other terms coming in for a literary lashing are "superfood," ''guru," ''job creators" and "double down."

University spokesman Tom Pink said that in nearly four decades, the Sault Ste. Marie school has "banished" around 900 words or phrases, and somehow the whole idea has survived rapidly advancing technology and diminishing attention spans.

Nominations used to come by mail, then fax and via the school's website, he said. Now most come through the university's Facebook page. That's fitting, since social media has helped accelerate the life cycle of certain words and phrases, such as this year's entry "YOLO" ? "you only live once."

"The list surprises me in one way or another every year, and the same way every year: I'm always surprised how people still like it, love it," he said.

Rounding out the list are "job creators/creation," ''boneless wings" and "passion/passionate." Those who nominated the last one say they are tired of hearing about a company's "passion" as a substitute for providing a service or product for money.

Andrew Foyle, of Bristol, England, said it's reached the point where "passion" is the only ingredient that keeps a chef from preparing "seared tuna" that tastes "like dust swept from a station platform."

"Apparently, it's insufficient to do it ably, with skill, commitment or finesse," Foyle said. "Passionate, begone!"

As usual, the etymological exercise ? or exorcise ? only goes so far. Past lists haven't eradicated "viral," "amazing," ''LOL" or "man cave" from everyday use.

China factory sector strongest since May 2011: survey

BEIJING (Reuters) - Activity in China's vast manufacturing sector hit its fastest pace in December since May 2011, a survey of private factory managers showed, with a sub-index for new orders pointing to continued strength in the new year.

The final reading for the HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 51.5 in December, well above the preliminary reading of 50.9 published in the middle of the month and November's final reading of 50.5.

A complementary December survey by China's National Bureau of Statistics, due to be published on Tuesday, is expected to show similar signs of manufacturing strength. Economists polled by Reuters expect the official PMI to show a rise to 51.0 from 50.6 in November, expanding at its fastest pace in eight months.

The HSBC PMI rose above 50, the line that demarcates accelerating from slowing growth, in November for the first time in more than a year.

The survey results fit with a growing consensus that the Chinese economy revved back up in the fourth quarter, after growth slowed for the seventh consecutive quarter to 7.4 percent in the third.

A sub-index tracking new orders showed even more room for optimism, rising to 52.9, its highest level since January 2011.

"Such a momentum is likely to be sustained in the coming months when infrastructure construction runs into full speed and property market conditions stabilize," Hongbin Qu, HSBC's chief economist for China, wrote in a note accompanying the survey.

"This, plus Beijing's reiteration of keeping pro-growth policy in place into the coming year, should support a modest growth recovery of around 8.6 percent year-on-year in 2013, despite the ongoing external headwinds."

In another sign of factory-sector growth, a sub-index tracking output rose to its highest level since May 2011.

The improving economic picture seems primarily linked to domestic demand, as China's export sector continues to grapple with a slowdown in its biggest markets. A new export orders sub-index retreated below 50 in December, after rising into expansionary territory in November for the first time in seven months.

"Infrastructure and housing are picking up, so related sectors like steel and cement are picking up," said analyst Zhang Zhiwei from Nomura International in Hong Kong.

"It's more driven by investment than consumption."

UPTICK

China is on course to achieve growth of 7.7 percent in 2012, according to forecasts in a benchmark Reuters poll, the slowest full year of expansion since 1999.

While that is way above the world's other major economies, it is below the roughly 10 percent annual growth seen for most of the last 30 years.

Manufacturing activity could be buoyed by brisk consumption in the final month of the year and the end of a destocking cycle, Xie Yaxuan, an analyst at Merchants Securities, said last week.

The government so far has relied on fine-tuning its policy settings to try to combat the worst downturn China has faced since the 2008-09 global financial crisis, studiously avoiding any hint of repeating the 4 trillion yuan ($640 billion) stimulus package it launched back then.

Measures to boost growth included injecting liquidity into the financial system through money market operations and accelerating approval of infrastructure projects.

However, while the central government has pledged to continue its strict property market controls, land prices have ticked up in many regions and developers are once again openly marketing luxury second homes, even in the capital. China's property sector directly supports over 40 industries.

Chinese Vice Finance Minister Li Yong, in comments published on December 26, warned of rising risks in the banking sector and pressure on government revenues in 2013.

Regulators are increasingly concerned over the risks posed by investment products that offer higher returns to depositors and investors, and help channel money into China's higher-interest rate shadow banking system.

Economist Michael Pettis of Peking University's Guanghua School of Management warned that even if regulators act to limit the proliferation of wealth management products, China will still see shrinking returns unless it moves away from its investment-led growth model.

"The problem is the inexorable tendency of the current development model to generate debt faster than it generates debt-servicing capacity," Pettis wrote in a recent newsletter.

"Growth in China is currently dependent on an unsustainable increase in debt."

Delhi gang rape victim was planning her wedding, friends say

The Indian woman who died after she was violently gang-raped aboard a Delhi bus was planning to get married next year, according to reports.

Friends of the 23-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, told Agence France-Presse that she was engaged to the man she boarded the bus with on the evening of Dec. 16.

He, too, was badly beaten by the same men who would go on to rape and fatally injure his companion.

"They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi," friend and neighbor Meena Rai told AFP, adding that she and the victim had been shopping for wedding outfits.

The ceremony was reportedly due to take place in February.

More from GlobalPost: Funeral held for Delhi gang rape victim

The victim died of her injuries early on Saturday. She was cremated Sunday morning in Delhi, amid tight security and ongoing protests.

The Hindustan Times paid tribute to the woman called variously "Nirbhaya," "India's daughter" and "the Braveheart" by Indian media.

"She was the entertainer of the household," the paper said, "perennially smiling" and a "brilliant student" who also enjoyed reality TV and fashion.

If she sounds like a normal young woman in life, in death she has become a symbol of the violence and injustice faced by millions of Indian girls and women.

According to the Hindustan Times, more than 20 women have been raped in Delhi since Dec. 16. A total of 635 rapes were reported to the city's police between January and November this year, the Press Trust of India said, already more than the 572 cases recorded in 2011.

Of the 754 suspects arrested in 2012, just one has so far been convicted, according to PTI.

tenth avenue south: Party at our house!

We spent a fabulous four days in Decatur visiting Frank's family followed by one day home to repack and four more fabulous days in Charlotte visiting my family. Then we came home last night to this...

Our new(ish) hot water heater had flooded our basement. Our basement is half finished (den, bedroom, bathroom) and half garage. The good news is that I got to use my new Hunter rain boots to splash through bedroom closet while cleaning it out.?

Did I mention that we're having the house appraised this morning to hopefully refinance??

Um, yea.

So already today we've had a visit from the appraiser, a contractor friend, and the plumber is here now. We're still waiting on ServePro (the clean up crew) and the insurance adjuster.?

Rockin' New Years Eve party, huh?

I'm tempted to put on a sparkly dress and serve champagne.

Might help seal some deals! ;)

But, I'm not complaining!

We're still blessed beyond measure and everything can be fixed.?

I'm reminded of a quote I just saw in a great little book my mom and I found at?Urban Outfitters...

No, not that (although it works, too).?

I am always tempted to ask 'Compared to what?'"

I am going to go ahead and claim this though...

Kashoo

First things first. Online accounting service Kashoo was named after some noodling-around with the phrase, "making your nut." After considering various varieties of nuts, the founders settled on Kashoo because of the first syllable in "cashew."

Kashoo is available as an app for the iPad, the only site the group we looked at in late 2012?to have accomplished this feat. And they had it ready 18 months ago. Not even QuickBooks Online is a member of that exclusive club.

All that aside, the application itself is a pleasure to use, thanks to a well-designed interface and intuitive navigational conventions. It's fairly young (about three years old), so it doesn't have the generous stable of add-ons that its competitors do. As of today, it only integrates with a Canadian payroll system, and it lacks the time- and item-tracking and some other features that QuickBooks online offers.

But it has the critical audit trail ("Change Log") that only QuickBooks Online offers in this group. It's a strong competitor in terms of its core functions: managing income and expenses downloaded from financial institutions; paying bills and invoicing customers; and staying on top of cash flow with reports and graphs. Kashoo is true double-entry accounting, which will make your financial person happy, and it's a global solution, supporting over 100 currencies.

A Different Starting Point
Kashoo starts you out on a slightly different home page than its competitors'. All of the sites reviewed here have a kind of "dashboard," a page that you'd look at first thing in the morning to get a sense of where you stand financially. These generally display charts and tables that provide data like account balances and income year-to-date. Some of them also remind you of tasks that must be done soon, like past due invoices and bills that must be paid, and they often contain links to record and transaction screens.

Kashoo's dashboard presents the standard account totals, net income and taxes and remittances, and links to pages containing more data, as well as a vertical pane containing links to other areas of the site. But it also lets you get to work immediately; the bulk of the screen is devoted to transaction forms for both income and expenses (invoices, bills, etc.). Each has its own dedicated page, but the dashboard's layout just lets you jump right in and get started. That approach is neither better nor worse than the others'?just a little different.

The main income and expense pages are more thorough than those on the dashboard, and their forms and related data are comparable to QuickBooks Online's. The transaction forms are at the top of each page, and a table displaying the most recent transactions is below that. Mini-reports appear in the vertical pane on the right. On the income screen, for example, you'd see your net income, aged receivables, receivables and income by customer and income by account. Links take you to more all-inclusive screens. The other sites reviewed here don't offer a similar configuration, and I think it's a helpful approach.

You can import customer and vendor records in CSV, vCard or Excel format, and there's a multi-step process for migrating from QuickBooks that's well-documented. Kashoo provides ample fields for the contact records that will eventually be used in transactions. Item-tracking is comparable to Less Accounting's; neither keeps a running tally of inventory levels like QuickBooks Online does, though.

Loading the Data
Personal finance manager Mint, owned by Intuit, was the first financial site to make a big splash with downloaded financial transactions. Desktop personal finance managers like Quicken and the now-defunct Microsoft Money had offered online banking since the mid-90s, but Mint was a website that made downloaded data the central focus of the application. Millions of paper checkbook registers began gathering dust because consumers could now have their checks and deposits and credit card charges just appear within Mint. At a glance, people could see what they were spending and taking in. This meant no more duplicate data entry, greatly-improved accuracy and lots of time saved.

Kashoo and its competitors reviewed here also focus on downloaded transactions; each can pull them down from thousands of financial institutions, so it's unlikely that your bank wouldn't be on their lists. The process works the same on Kashoo as it does on competing sites. You just click the Accounts tab on any page and enter the name of your financial institution (or start typing and select it from the list). You'll need to enter the same user ID and password that you use to log into the bank's site itself. After a short wait, your most recent transactions appear (you can also download statements in OFX, QFX and QBO format), which you can refresh anytime.

You enter invoices and expenses the same way you do on competing websites by making selections from drop-down lists to fill in the blanks on the forms. But Kashoo veers off from what is fairly standard on other online accounting sites. For example, you'd expect to see a label called something like, "Product" or "Item" on the field whose drop-down list held products and services. Instead, on the invoice it says, "Income Account," and then there's a field for a more specific description. And you can't assign a class or category or tag to use as a filter in later reporting, as other applications allow.

International Appeal
Kashoo allows unlimited collaborators for no additional charge, unlike QuickBooks Online. So it makes sense that a small business might invite its accountant in to check its work occasionally and get ready for taxes. Accounting professionals would find a lot about this site appealing, like the fact that it's true double-entry accounting and it includes what it calls a "change log," which is a continuous record of every activity that anyone does on the site. In fact, a few of the features seem more appropriate for a financial advisor than a non-accountant in a small business, like the Adjustment page, where you have to understand debits and credits to enter data.

Kashoo does have global appeal; it provides updated exchange information for multiple currencies and allows sales tax localization. But its Canadian-only payroll is one of only two add-ons at this point, the other being FreshBooks?which does add a great deal to the sales side of your financial management. Its iPad-optimized app, though, is a big feather in the company's cap.

I'd recommend the site for small businesses whose needs don't include payroll or time billing or extensibility. For now, though, QuickBooks Online fills in the gaps that Kashoo leaves open, and is a better overall solution.

1988 Ford Tempo GL from North America

I purchased this Ford Tempo about 6 months ago following a mechanical breakdown in the Camry I owned previously (timing belt)... Being a bit strapped for cash at the time, I decided to take my chances on an $800.00 vehicle, which was this Tempo.

The vehicle has been a pleasant surprise in spite of some not so positive critiques on this and other web sites.

While I won't say that the vehicle is my all time favorite, it is a practical and reliable mode of transportation. The 2.3L 4 cylinder engine is powerful enough for commuting to and from work or running errands. It starts religiously each and every morning... even on the coldest December mornings. The automatic transmission shifts smooth and is running strong for a 25 year old car.

The body style is "plain" and rather non-descript, but is amazingly free of any serious rust - while parts of the car's paint finish have suffered from chipping and peeling of the clear coat finish, the paint itself for the most part has held up quite satisfactorily... all bumpers and side molding are intact and the glass good throughout.

The car's interior is in excellent shape, taking into account that it is a 1988 model... the cloth interior, as well as all dash and door panels are in really great condition. Accessories, such as heat and cruise control, are quite operational; the radio, a "plain Jane" Ford sound system, is functional for my needs. The A/C, while still working, is in need of a recharge... not so sure I will invest the dollars necessary to bring it up to the current standard. It really appears that Ford put quite a bit of effort in making a comfortable and functional sedan - one built for the long haul.

There are just a few relatively minor inconveniences that I've encountered with my Tempo... here's a brief summary:

1.) Power windows on both the driver and passenger side have failed. After receiving a quote for nearly $400 bucks to do one side, I think I'll visit my local salvage yard and do the work myself.

2.) CV joints are worn and in need of replacement soon (makes for rather noisy operation on those tight turns).

3.) The car seems to have a bit of a rough idle at times; in spite of a recent full tune up and no "codes" showing up, the car continues to "miss" at times.

Yes... relatively few complaints for an inexpensive vehicle.

In summary, the Ford Tempo is a dependable utility grade car; no frills, no exceptional styling; just a decent set of wheels to get you from point A to Point B. The engine is durable and gas mileage is satisfactory (25 to 30 MPG on average). The cost of ownership from what I have witnessed is quite good. The parts for this vehicle appear to be readily available, and mechanically speaking, it is fairly simple and straight forward to maintain.

wise self improvement | self improvement made easy: In Your Role ...

In your area of leadership how do cope with vital issue of forgiveness? How do you forgive people who have messed up your programme or let you down or hurt you in some specific way?

The best way to learn something well is to learn from an expert. Jesus Christ is best and finest and highest expert there is on any topic of leadership and especially forgiveness. After all, this was the main reason for His coming into the world at Bethlehem.

In my recent reading and study of Matthew Chapters 5 and 6 in the Sermon on the Mount, we learn how this 'expert' trained and prepared men for leadership

Jesus assumed His disciples would give and fast and pray. The Jewish people prayed regularly but in many instances it had degenerated into what was nothing more than words. There was no depth.

Jesus teaches His disciples to pray with sincerity, not like the hypocrites, who were doing it to be seen and for show.

Jesus is not criticising public worship or corporate prayer, but He is warning against praying for the wrong motives, when men might be hoping that others will be impressed by our spirituality.

There is also the sense of privacy, or even secrecy, where there will no distractions, and no admirers, and where in our private praying we will not be disturbed. Jesus mentions going into your room and closing the door. It is the word for the store room where treasures are kept. That is where we have that privilege of encountering and meeting with our Creator God.

And be simple. Hypocrites prayed with wrong motives and pagans prayed in a wrong manner. It is all there in verses 7 and 8.

Jesus was not against repetition, but He was against mindless repetition. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus repeated the same prayer three times.

Father - Pater - we are to remember we are speaking to Almighty God.

We honour His Name, and we pray for His Kingdom to come, and for His reign and rule to transform our world, in the political arena, and in the economic, banking, financial, and family world. If leaders prayed more think of how some of the social injustices might be corrected, and how the atmosphere in our schools, and even in international situations, might be transformed. This is the task of leaders no matter where they are leading.

We pray for His will, and that will is Good, Pleasing, and Perfect. We read of this in the opening words of Romans Chapter 12. Most people do not realise that the Will of God is good, pleasing and perfect.

There is almost a realising of brokenness when we pray for forgiveness.

There is no hardness, nor harshness towards others, if we come in need for forgiveness.

We come in need in repentance and in humility. There is a seriousness.

Just give me the bread for today - no - we need the forgiveness too. Sin can keep a man away from asking God for forgiveness.

Leaders need Provision and Forgiveness and now Protection. We need to be protected from the evil one, throughout our every path of life.

Do not let us be so tempted that we will be overwhelmed.

Deliver us from the one who would infect us with his evil and rip Your Truth from our minds.

Deliver us from the one who is out to destroy us.

The best thing to do with the Lord's Prayer is to pray it.

If you are a leader pray for your people. Pray for you business. Watch your language and attitude. Be authoritative but kind and gracious and aware of the needs of those around you and watch productivity increase as the workplace atmosphere is changed and transformed, for the better.

Costa Phillippou gets big win as Tim Boetsch deals with rough night at UFC 155

Costa Philippou wasn't even supposed to be fighting at UFC 155. It was supposed to be Chris Weidman, Philippou's teammate, taking on Tim Boetsch. It was supposed to be a fight that decided a potential contender for Anderson Silva's bout. But in MMA, things don't always work out like they are supposed to, and Philippou walked away with a win at UFC 155.

Philippou stepped in to fight Boetsch after Weidman was injured in training camp. Boetsch took an early lead with clinch work and takedowns in the first round, but between rounds he talked about an injury that was bothering him. It got worse for Boetsch in the second round, as a large cut opened in his forehead and he was poked in the eye.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

With his eye swelling and blood covering his face, Boetsch tried to deal with Philippou's striking. Boetsch attempted takedowns, but couldn't hold off Philippou, who finished the fight at 2:11 in the third round.

After the fight, Philippou sent this tweet that said it all.

Though he's now 12-2 and has five straight wins in the UFC, Philippou has flown under the radar among middleweights. It will be hard to ignore him after he took advantage of this opportunity at UFC 155.

Construction and Panama Residential Real Estate market update

| No Responses

Construction shifts following demand
New starts up by more than than 45%

The vast majority of the condominium projects that dotted the Panama skyline for the last six years are finally being delivered, with reports showing that there are less than 2,500 condo units still in development between the waterfront areas of Punta Pacifica, Balboa Avenue, and San Francisco.

The numbers prove that the pipeline for new residential projects in the Panama metro area is down significantly as developers shift their resources towards non-housing projects, which are up sharply from last year.? We?ve seen that most of the nearly 8,000 new condo units that entered the market over the last 24-36 months have had little effect on overall pricing, with condos being generally sold in the areas mentioned above at around 2007 pricing levels. There has also been strong absorption of the new inventory and according to an article in Capital Financiero, over 70% of the 2,500 units in the areas mentioned above and currently in construction are either ?reserved or sold.?

AIn the first seven months of the year the value of approved construction projects amounted to $918 million, 45.3% more than in the same period last year. Of the total number of permits approved, $705 million worth was for projects to be developed in the capital, being mostly non-residential. Hotel, office, and mixed use commercial space continue to drive the construction market and have helped keep unemployment below 5%.

While privately financed projects in these sectors have kept Panamanian workers employed over the last six years, we believe that as these projects come to an end there will be more to follow. The city continues to grow to the east and to the west, and we?ve seen the focus shifting towards logistics centers near the airport, an expanded port and marina presence on the Pacific side, and more development in the country?s ?interior.?? Public works projects also continue at full steam, with the Panama Canal expansion project and the Panama Metro initative approaching full capacity.

This bodes well for the market in 2013, as the supply of brand new condos will be down sharply in the Panama metro area.? Assuming demand will be as good or better in 2013 than it was in 2012, pricing gains are likely for select areas for this sector.

In other news, the Panama Canal ended their fiscal year last month and posted a $1 billion dollar profit, nearly $50 million more than what was projected.? This money will go directly to the national treasury and be used to fund projects like roads, hospitals, and education.

2012 GDP is predicted to come out around 11%, leading Latin America and driven mostly by construction, financial services, and mining.

Ohio whips ULM 45-14 to win Independence Bowl

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) ? The final pass of Tyler Tettleton's dizzying early-game onslaught was beautiful ? a 68-yard touchdown heave to Chase Cochran over two defenders.

Ohio coach Frank Solich couldn't have designed a better beginning to a football game. And the end result ? a dominant 45-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the Independence Bowl on Friday ? wasn't too bad either.

"It was probably as complete of ballgame as we've played in some time," Solich said. "I think our guys played with great intensity and a great deal of heart. We showed we can play a great game against a really good team like Louisiana-Monroe."

Tettleton's early heroics staked the Bobcats (9-4) to an early 14-0 lead and Louisiana-Monroe was never really able to gain its footing. During the two early touchdown drives, Tettleton completed all five of his passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns.

He finished 14 of 22 passing for 331 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

"We knew we were going up against a great front seven, so our game plan was to take some shots down field and let our playmakers make plays," Tettleton said.

They certainly did. Cochran caught three passes for 162 yards while Tyler Futrell had five receptions for 133 yards. With Tettleton softening the Louisiana-Monroe defense early, running back Beau Blankenship provided the power offense to seal the game, rushing for 104 yards and an Independence Bowl record four touchdowns.

Tettleton was especially sharp in the first half, completing 9 of 14 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns as Ohio built a 24-7 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe (8-5) struggled in its first bowl game after 19 seasons in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kolton Browning completed 21 of 39 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three first-half interceptions.

Ohio broke several Independence Bowl records, including the 31-point margin of victory and 556 total yards.

Ohio lost four of five games to end the regular season ? including the last three ? but looked crisp in a complete performance against the Warhawks.

Tettleton's 2012 season had been a slight disappointment considering the huge numbers he put up the year before as a sophomore, but his performance against Louisiana-Monroe was a reminder of how good he can be. He averaged more than 23 yards per completion.

Blankenship finished with a school record 1,604 yards rushing yards this season and topped the 100-yard mark for the 10th time. All four of his touchdown runs came from 2 yards out or less.

Louisiana-Monroe came into Friday's game with the better storyline and basically a home-field advantage. The Warhawks were playing in their first bowl game after joining college football's highest level in 1994 and secured a bid in Shreveport, which is only about 100 miles from their campus.

But that emotional lift didn't help ULM's defense, which was torched by Tettleton's deep ball accuracy early and Blankenship's hard running late.

Tettleton needed just three passes to lead Ohio to its first touchdown. He hit Futrell on a 26-yard gain and Cochran on a 51-yard strike before finding Donte Foster for the 3-yard score.

A few minutes later, Tettleton hit Cochran perfectly in stride for the 68-yarder that gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe briefly showed some life early in the second quarter when Browning's 14-yard touchdown pass to Tavarese Maye cut the margin to 14-7.

But Ohio came right back, using Matt Weller's 38-yard field goal and Blankenship's 2-yard touchdown run to push ahead 24-7 with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Blankenship's touchdown run was set up by Browning's third interception of the first half.

Louisiana-Monroe had a chance to cut into the deficit just before halftime, but coach Todd Berry's gamble to go for a touchdown instead of a short field goal backfired when Browning's final pass of the half sailed harmlessly out the back of the end zone.

Berry's gamble wasn't a surprise ? the Warhawks had gained a reputation for unorthodox play-calling during their record-setting season. But nothing seemed to work against the Bobcats, and the large ULM fan contingent had mostly disappeared from the stands by the end of the third quarter.

It was a disappointing ending for the Warhawks, who started the season with a stunning overtime victory over Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., and still finished with the best season in school history since moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision.

"This will get us back to work," Berry said. "I would have liked it to have been a little cleaner. But I also recognize the opportunities for this football team next year. This will add fuel to the fire. We will have a great offseason because of what happened today and that's what we're going to use. This group will rally."

Iraqi Sunnis demonstrate in Anbar, west of Baghdad

FALLUJAH, Iraq (AP) ? Witnesses say tens of thousands of Iraqi Sunni Muslims have massed along a major western highway in the latest of a week of large demonstrations against the Shiite-led government.

The protesters gathered Friday near the city of Fallujah, which is in the vast Sunni-dominated province of Anbar west of Baghdad.

Protesters held aloft placards declaring the day a "Friday of honor." Some carried old Iraqi flags used during the era of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein. Others raised current ones.

The demonstrations follow the arrest last week of 10 bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi, who comes from Anbar and is one of the central government's most senior Sunni officials.

The province has been the scene of several large demonstrations and road blockages since last Saturday.

Top 10 insurance stories of 2012 ? Bankrate, Inc.

Insurance news touched the lives of every American in 2012. Dim the lights, cue the music and ready the ball to drop (no worries, it's insured),? because here's my countdown of the top 10 insurance stories of the year.

10. Bundling: Allstate continued to wash its hands of "unprofitable" business by shedding 10,000 South Carolina homeowners insurance customers who refused to bundle in their auto insurance and have their cars covered by the "good hands" people, too. The company previously purged 45,000 nonbundling North Carolina customers in November 2011, sparking protests from Bankrate readers.

9. Curbing bad habits: Insurance companies are sick of paying for our bad habits. A Cornell University study found that obesity directly contributes to $190 billion in health care costs each year, a staggering 20 percent of our national health care expenditures. Employers are choking on the cost to insure workers who smoke, a breathtaking $193 billion each year, or an additional $11,000 per smoker annually. As for intoxicants, health insurers have convinced legislatures in 25 states to pass "alcohol exclusion" laws that allow insurers the option to not cover you if you injure yourself while buzzed on alcohol or drugs.

8. Texting, driving and dodging: Federal officials say the use of mobile devices while driving causes 3,000 fatalities each year. The question is, how will the auto insurance industry respond? So far, it has largely avoided the subject.

7. Flood reform at last: The bad news? The National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP, remains about $18 billion in the red, largely due to Hurricane Katrina. The good news? Last July, President Barack Obama signed the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, which extends NFIP for five whole years and ushers in long-overdue reforms designed to make the program self-sustaining for the first time in its history.

6. Auto under siege: The Consumer Federation of America took auto insurers to task in 2012, accusing the industry of charging the poor more for auto coverage; bilking consumers out of "tens of millions of dollars" by manipulating computerized claims data; using personal?information such as gender, employment and education to set policy rates; and quoting excessively high rates on online shopping sites. An insurance trade group responded that car insurance rates are seeing increases in line with overall inflation.

5. New homeowners pay more: New homeowners felt the sting of weather-driven home insurance rate increases, paying on average 19 percent more in 2011, a jump from $682 a year to $810 nationally.

4. Preventive care included: For the first time in history, the federal government now requires health insurers to provide dozens of preventive screenings and services to all insured Americans without additional cost. The requirement, part of health care reform, is especially beneficial to women, as it includes free mammograms and human papillomavirus, or HPV, testing.

3. Feds to run most state exchanges: Because more than half the states chose to work against rather than with health care reform these past three years, the federal government will set up and operate the mandated health insurance exchanges in two-thirds of the states beginning in 2014.

2. Isaac and Sandy: Hurricane Isaac and Superstorm Sandy, coming just a year after lumbering Hurricane Irene, proved yet again that slow-moving, widespread drenchers can cause just as much destruction as?megastorms like Andrew and Katrina. The question lingers: Is this the new normal?

1. Obamacare survives two scares: The Affordable Care Act of 2010, Obama's landmark course adjustment for America's health care system, emerged largely unscathed from a contentious three-month U.S. Supreme Court battle, then cleared its final hurdle with the president's re-election.

A happy and prosperous new year to you all!

Devastating Loss Spurs Vet Group To Create ... - Business Insider

?Inspiration is important with every startup,? Anthony Allman tells me about his POS-REP mobile application, which is currently in the final stages of Apple approval. The inspiration, in the former soldier?s case, came from an unlikely avenue: destruction.

In Haiti, Chile, and more recently in the Midwest and New York City, a non-profit group of former military service members known as Team Rubicon have been on the ground providing relief to victims of disasters. One of the most vocal supporters of the group was former Marine turned-volunteer Clay Hunt.

?I cannot tell you how good it feels to be able to go into a rubble-strewn city in a third world country, and to be able to do good without wondering if everybody is about to start shooting at you,? wrote Hunt on the Team Rubicon website. ?I found a renewed sense of purpose for myself that has been missing since I separated from the USMC, and I found myself in the company of a band of brothers once again ? absolutely priceless.?

Hunt?s renewed vigor for life was overshadowed however, by thoughts of his war in Iraq with the Marines. He lost friends and was wounded in an insurgent attack. He tried to stay positive after his discharge, but his mind always wandered to the medical evacuation of a close friend. ?It?s a scene that plays on repeat in my head nearly every day, and most nights as well,? he later wrote.

His depression and post traumatic stress disorder caught up to him on March 31, 2011, when he ended his life, alone in his Houston apartment.

?The story that wasn?t told and that people don?t know for the most part, when Jake [Wood] and Will McNulty went to the funeral,? Allman told me of the founders of Team Rubicon, is that ?they found three guys from Clay?s area who were within 10 miles of him. It took a funeral to bring everyone together.?

From a devastating loss, and the revelation that there were others in the area who could have possibly helped if they knew Hunt?s struggle, the idea for POS-REP was born.

?[Jake asked] ?What do you think of a mobile app that allows veterans to communicate with each other based on their proximity??? Although Allman was working on another startup at the time, he left that organization soon after and began developing the idea.

The mobile app, which is currently on the iPhone with later plans for Android, allows veterans to locate other veterans around them, communicate, and find resources in their local communities to help them in their transition out of the military.

?My goal is to fundamentally transform the veteran reintegration experience,? Allman says. ?I think the TAP [Transition Assistance Program] is flawed. The courses that you go through on a military base lack relevancy for where you actually go.?

Allman speaks from experience. After serving his last duty with the 4th Infantry Division, he was honorably discharged in 2003. ?When I got out, I didn?t know where a lot of the resources were in L.A.,? he says.

POS-REP, which is shorthand for the military term ?position report,? is being developed by Allman and a five-man team. It boasts a variety of features that can not only help veterans, but hosts some interesting technology. ?We?re really talking about innovation in the veterans reintegration experience,? Allman says.

The free download has a feature called Radar, which shows a map of other veterans around the area, and allows broadcasting of user locations based on your own privacy settings. Then there?s Sitrep, which Allman describes as a ?hyper-local version of Twitter,? allowing users to post status updates and communicate.

?What if Clay knew that people from his unit were within 5 to 10 miles? It could?ve changed his whole life. It could?ve changed everyone?s life,? Allman says. That idea is the basis for the Squads feature, which Allman illustrates as a way for military members to stay connected with their brothers and sisters in arms.?

?You?re leaving the service. Squad up with the people in your section or platoon,? Allman says. ?It?s the quickest way to maintain comms with the people you served with.? With two touches, a user can communicate with their entire squad, or initiate chat with an individual.

But Allman insists that the app isn?t only about communication. The long-term goal is to set veterans on a path to success. ?We can provide resources and push that information to you based on your location,? he says.

?You need to know the jobs in your area. You need to know the schools in your area,? Allman says. ?We turn TAP on its head. We make TAP hyper-local. I believe veteran reintegration is a local experience.?

POS-REP has more information available at their website.

Losing baby weight the EASY way with self-hypnosis | Health and ...

Losing baby weight the EASY way with self-hypnosisClick Image For Info!As a mom, I know how having a new baby can bring a bit of extra weight. ?That?s why I developed this self-hypnosis program specifically to help you get your pre-baby body back.

If you answered ?Yes? to any of these questions, then the New Mom, Great Body! Self-Hypnosis Weightloss program is just what you?re looking for.

Mia has a thorough understanding of how limiting beliefs and negative mental patterns affect your ability to achieve your goals, including your goal to shed the excess weight you may have gained during pregnancy.

Mia also has a background in Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, with excellent knowledge in nutrition and health.

She works predominantly with new parents helping them to live their dreams and become living inspirations for their kids.

The self-hypnosis audio track is a?high-quality MP3?that you can download today and use on any player.

White noise is a sound that contains all audible frequencies, and has been?proven to help the mind relax and focus more easily.? This, combined with a?powerful NLP technique, will ensure that you receive the full benefits of the self-hypnosis.

That is because?problems with weight-gain lie at a very deep unconscious level,?with beliefs and habits that are almost entrenched in your view of yourself and the world, and prevent you from reaching your goal easily.

Both NLP and hypnosis can?clear these blockages in your unconscious?making success easy and inevitable.

??The trance ?state? in hypnotherapy is nothing more than a deep state of relaxation.?If you?ve ever been for a full-body massage and felt completely ?zoned out? at the end of it, you?ll already know what this feels like.

When we are deeply relaxed it is easier to suggest ideas directly to the unconscious mind (the part that is running our lives) as we have allowed our conscious, analytical part to take a break.

During hypnosis you are still in control and will only accept suggestions that are for your benefit.?For example, if I said to you ?close your eyes? you most likely would, but if I said to you ?go rob a bank? you wouldn?t (well hopefully not!) as this is against your moral code, whether under hypnosis or not.

Your moral system is still in place no matter how relaxed you are. And just to make sure that you are comfortable with this I always include the pre-cursor ?if this is for your benefit? to any suggestion made during the hypnotic track.

This means that losing baby weight will become much easier, because hypnosis can?remove the self-sabotage, habits and beliefs?that are preventing you from making the right choices.

Have you ever been very relaxed? That is essentially what hypnosis is ??a deep state of relaxation. It is a normal, natural state and we all go in and out of different levels of hypnosis all the time. Have you ever been? Read more?

Rewind 2012: In film, reality takes a vacation

?

Quvenzhane Wallis' performance in Beast of the Southern Wild wasn't enough to pick up a Golden Globe.

Photograph by: Jess Pinkham

From Bond to Batman, Hushpuppy to Django, film turned to fantasy in 2012, and fantasy got a reality check. It?s in the blurring of the lines in between that movies find their magic.

I?m not (just) talking hocus-pocus, but the je ne sais quoi that makes a film resonate, excite and enthrall. Movies have long been celebrated for their ability to sweep us away. But if that?s all there was to it, we?d get bored quick.

Which is what made some of the year?s biggest blockbusters stand out. The Hunger Games introduced an alternate universe where kids battle to the death for reality TV-style entertainment, but gritty establishing scenes of life in the district where heroine Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is from gave the film a crucial dose of serious.

The Dark Knight Rises closed Christopher Nolan?s Batman trilogy with a brooding, quasi-apocalyptic touch. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) begins the film beaten down and depressed, hiding from the world as he struggles with his inner demons. Even when Batman emerges to fight for justice, Nolan doesn?t lift the oppressive weight resting on his protagonist?s shoulders. It makes for a better film; in fact, it makes the film.

Much like Sam Mendes?s revitalized James Bond epic, Skyfall. Taking considerable time to delve into 007?s backstory, Mendes imbues the mythical secret service agent with a crucial element of edge.

What fun is a hero who shows no sign of weakness? In Skyfall, Daniel Craig?s Bond is downright unfit for duty in the early stages, while the film?s climactic third act has him returning to face his painful past.

Stripped of modern gadgets and gimmicks, the grand finale is a statement about the timelessness of good old tried-and-true drama over explosions and special effects ? though we get our share of those, too.

On the flip side, several of the year?s most engaging movies borrowed freely from the land of make-believe. Benh Zeitlin?s spectacular Beasts of the Southern Wild was, on the one hand, a devastating reality-based tale about a young girl named Hushpuppy (Quvenzhan? Wallis) who lives with her drug-addicted father in the hurricane-prone backwaters of the Louisiana bayou. Told through her eyes, the film uses prehistoric animals called aurochs as a recurring motif, along with a heart-swelling soundtrack to give her journey a larger-than-life feel. The combination made for the most mesmerizing movie experience of the year.

While he didn?t indulge in fantasy, Quebec director Kim Nguyen allowed for some respite in Rebelle, his tough tale of child soldiers in sub-Saharan Africa. The violence of the film is unflinching, but Nguyen elevates his story via the romance between protagonist Komona (Rachel Mwanza) and fellow child soldier Magicien (Serge Kanyinda). He brings nuance to his story by contrasting the intolerable cruelty suffered by these children with glimpses of the carefree life they should be living.

The balance resonates. Rebelle has racked up accolades internationally, winning best actress (Mwanza) and a special mention from the ecumenical jury at the Berlin International Film Festival; taking best film and best actress at New York?s Tribeca Film Festival; and earning a spot on the nine-film short list for the Oscar for best foreign-language film (the five nominees will be announced Jan. 10).

Quentin Tarantino didn?t let the facts get in the way of a good time as he mined another shameful historical period (following his Nazi Germany remix, Inglourious Basterds) in Django Unchained. Taking inspiration from blaxploitation flicks and spaghetti westerns, his delightfully outlandish revenge fantasy finds a freed slave (Jamie Foxx) and a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) pulling off a guns-blazing rescue mission in the pre-Civil War deep south.

And yet, rooting the story beneath the tomfoolery are the very real indignities suffered by black people a mere century-and-a-half back. That tension ? and the fearless breaking of the social codes of the time ? is at the heart of the film?s twisted humour and giddy appeal.

There is very little reality beyond the awkward idealism of childhood in Wes Anderson?s awesome Moonrise Kingdom. And yet by sticking tightly to the deadpan determination of his young protagonists, he captures a different kind of truth.

When the dismissal of realism is so complete, a story can play by its own rules. The catch is that it has to hook us somewhere along the way; we have to believe it, even if only according to its own skewed internal logic.

Which is the premise of another of the year?s big movies, Ang Lee?s fantastical adaptation of Yann Martel?s Life of Pi. The nature of storytelling is at the heart of Martel?s tale, and Lee?s effects-laden film gives substance to its most outlandish elements. When all is said and done, the truth is still up for grabs.

?I can only tell my story,? says the grown-up Pi. ?After that, you will decide what you believe.?

Sarah Polley put her finger on it with Stories We Tell, her fascinating documentary revealing a long-hidden family secret. Interviewing family members and friends, one by one, the Canadian director shows the truth to be a slippery sucker.

Somewhere in the midst of her interviewees? diverging accounts of events, we get a piecemeal collage of what happened. It?s precisely in that grey area, where things are uncertain, that the story is most intriguing.

Leave it to a documentary to teach us a lesson about our individual need for fiction ? our tendency to make things up, to imagine or remember events as best suits our needs.

In the end, fact and fantasy are equally necessary. The best stories, and the best films, strike a balance.

Expectations low for White House 'fiscal cliff' meeting

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and congressional leaders were to meet on Friday for the first time since November with no sign of progress in resolving their differences over the federal budget and low expectations for a "fiscal cliff" deal before January 1.

Instead, members of Congress are increasingly looking at the period immediately after the December 31 deadline to come up with a retroactive fix to avoid the steep tax hikes and sharp spending cuts that economists have said could plunge the country into another recession.

With taxes on all Americans set to rise when rates established under former President George W. Bush expire on December 31, lawmakers would be able to come back in January and take a more politically palatable vote to cut some of the tax rates.

U.S. stocks fell on Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial average dropping 0.48 percent as investors fretted about the lack of certainty.

But some in the market were resigned to Washington going beyond the New Year's Day deadline, as long as a serious agreement on deficit reduction comes out of the talks in early January.

"Regardless of whether the government resolves the issues now, any deal can easily be retroactive. We're not as concerned with January 1 as the market seems to be," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

The new factor in the mix was involvement by Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who held conversations with Obama this week and said he expected a new proposal from the president that he would consider.

The White House spent much of Thursday stifling expectations for any new offer from Obama, beyond the limited fallback plan he outlined in vague terms on December 21, which would protect what he described as "middle class Americans" from the tax hikes, extend unemployment insurance and lay the "groundwork for further work" on deficit reduction and tax reform.

The major sticking point on taxes is Republican opposition to hikes on anyone, particularly in the absence of heavy cuts in spending for so-called entitlement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, the government-run health programs for senior citizens and the poor.

Democrats in Congress want to keep lower tax rates for most Americans but raise them on those earning above $250,000 a year.

"The wealthy have got to kick in," Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat, said Friday on CNN. "The tough part is in the House, where they have taken this very extreme position" of "protecting the wealthy at all costs," she said.

"It's feeling very much to me like an optical meeting than a substantive meeting," said Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, noting that it was not a sign of urgency to set a meeting for mid-afternoon with a deadline just days away.

"Any time you announce a meeting publicly in Washington, it's usually for political theater purposes," Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said on Thursday on Fox News.

"When the president calls congressional leaders to the White House, it's all political theater or they've got a deal. My bet is all political theater," said Graham, adding that he did not believe an agreement could be reached before the deadline.

Paul Daley out of Bellator tournament after problems with visa arise

Paul Daley's next shot in MMA has hit a roadbump. The British fighter, who was cut from the UFC after he threw a cheap shot after the bell at Josh Koscheck in 2010, is out of Bellator's welterweight tournament. He can't enter the United States because of issues getting a work visa.

ESPN reports Daley was involved in a bar brawl and was charged with assault, which is the problem with the visa. Daley denies the brawl, and says via his Facebook page it was just a problem with his visa.

It seems as though (sp) a mass press release has gone out to the MMA media stating I was involved (in a) bar brawl, arrested, and cannot obtain a P-1 visa to compete in the USA. I am currently awaiting a decision on my visa, which is not expected until late April. Which means I am unable to compete in the season 8 Bellator tournament, as it starts in January. I will be fighting in Europe in the coming months, so I am able to stay active while awaiting a decision on my visa status. I was not involved in a bar brawl. This is 100-percent a false statement.

Previously, Daley has fought in the United States for Bellator, Strikeforce and the UFC without any visa issues.
