No. 1 Alabama eases past Ole Miss, 33-14

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) ? No. 1 Alabama actually trailed for a change, a predicament that lasted a grand total of 15 seconds.

Amari Cooper caught two touchdown passes from AJ McCarron and Christion Jones returned a kickoff 99 yards for another score, leading the Crimson Tide to a 33-14 victory over Mississippi Saturday night after a rare and early deficit.

The Tide (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) trailed briefly, 7-6, for the first time in regulation since last year's Tennessee game, a span of about 10 games. The Rebels (3-2, 0-1) put up a fight against a team that had been walloping opponents by nearly 37 points on average, but still lost their ninth straight SEC opener.

"It was a hard-fought win for us," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "I think people probably don't give Ole Miss enough credit. They played hard. They were physical. Their offense is difficult to defend."

Saban had tried to keep his players focused by broadcasting Tim Tebow's memorable speech after the Rebels upset Florida four years ago in the weight room and meeting rooms. Alabama goes into its open week without needing such a podium prompter.

McCarron completed 22 of 30 passes for 180 yards and Eddie Lacy gained much of his 82 yards in the fourth quarter when Alabama put it away with Jeremy Shelley's third and fourth field goals of the game.

The Tide's defense had three interceptions to bail out an offense that sputtered at times.

"Couldn't be more proud of the effort," Rebels first-year coach Hugh Freeze said. "Real pleased with the effort and fight our kids showed. They laid it on the line. They represented Rebel nation and the university very well.

"Our special teams were atrocious. We turned the football over because of us being greedy. It's hard to drive the football on the defense that they have."

Alabama totaled 305 yards against a defense that gave up 66 points and 676 yards to Texas two weeks ago. The Rebels gained 218 yards in a game that was largely controlled by the defenses after days when SEC teams like Texas A&M and Georgia rolled up 50-plus points.

Lacy had 12 carries for 43 yards through three quarters. Cooper collected eight catches for 84 yards.

McCarron broke Brodie Croyle's school mark of 190 consecutive passes without an interception. He finished the game with 206 in a row.

Bo Wallace was 15-of-26 passing for 123 yards for Ole Miss and was intercepted twice. Jeff Scott, the SEC's No. 5 rusher, was limited to 49 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown.

Ole Miss did something no other team had done in about 10 games: Got a lead on Alabama in regulation. It lasted only as long as it took Jones to run back the ensuing kick.

Scott cut inside for a 1-yard touchdown early in the second quarter for a 7-6 lead. That ended the Tide's streak at 603 minutes, 46 seconds dating back to a 3-0 first quarter deficit against the Volunteers last season.

It was fleeting. Jones raced untouched for a touchdown after grabbing the ball on a high bounce at the goal line and Alabama scored two more TDs before halftime to surge to a 27-7 lead.

It was Alabama's first kick return for a TD since Trent Richardson did it against Duke on Sept. 18, 2010.

"When they scored ... I kind of wanted to change the atmosphere of the game, the flow of the game, and not make it so the offense had to drive down," he said. "In my mind I was thinking, 'Yeah, let's go ahead and get one to the house, let's change the atmosphere of the game.'"

Mission accomplished for Jones.

Then, Dee Milliner intercepted a pass that Wallace threw right to him. Three plays later, McCarron hit the playmaking freshman Cooper for a 16-yard touchdown. It was ruled incomplete, but a review overturned the call after replays showed he had possession with a foot in bounds and the ball stretched just across the goal line.

Cooper reached over Frank Crawford in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown. Both his scores were on third-down plays.

The Tide defense picked off passes on consecutive on consecutive drives after Ole Miss scored its first touchdown.

"That was the turning point in the game," Saban said. "We really only put one true drive together. Those turnovers were really the difference in the game."

Ole Miss didn't score again until Randall Mackey's 12-yard touchdown run with 6:35 left in the third quarter trimmed the deficit to 27-14. The Rebels converted two fourth-down plays on the drive, on a Jeff Scott run and catch.

The Rebels had one final chance to stay in the game. They inched across midfield midway through the fourth but had to punt and Alabama ran most of the clock down with a ground game mostly held in check before getting another field goal.

"The mistakes really hurt us," Mackey said "We kind of hurt ourselves really. We wanted to hit them in the mouth and we did. When you play Bama, they're the best of the best. It gives us confidence in the way we played. We've just got to stop the mistakes.

"Every time you play Alabama, it's their defense. You can't give them anything."

Game recap: Boise St. 32, New Mexico 29

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.

The No. 24 Boise St. Broncos narrowly averted a upset by their unheralded host, the New Mexico Lobos, but came up with plays on offense and defense when they needed them in the fourth quarter to escape Albuquerque with a 32-29 victory Saturday night.Turnovers played a big part in the Mountain West Conference for both teams.

The Broncos used three UNM turnovers to build a 25-0 halftime lead. The Lobos countered in the second half, using a pair of BSU fumbles to vault them to 29 second half points and the near upset before 28,270 at Branch Field at University Stadium.

"It was two different games, two halves of football and two different games," said New Mexico coach Bob Davie. "The biggest reason was because of turnovers. In the first half we turned the ball over three times. We were able to move the ball, but we had no points at halftime. Defensively, we've got to keep plugging away... keep plugging away. If we don't force some turnovers, we have a hard, hard time."

Looking nothing like the team that was beaten 45-0 by Boise St. in both teams' regular season closer in 2011, New Mexico (2-3, 0-1 MWC) close to 32-29 on a touchdown run by freshman quarterback Cole Gautsche with 7:42 left in the game. The score was made possible by a 53-yard fumble return by linebacker Joe Stoner after UNM's A.J. Butler stripped the ball from Boise ball carrier Shane Williams-Rhodes on an end around the play before. On the ensuing drive, the Lobo defense allowed the Broncos into UNM territory but stiffened at the UNM 27-yard line.

Boise St. kicker Michael Frisina missed a 44-yard field goal attempt to give the Lobos two minutes of clock and at chance to at least tie the game. But the Lobos went three-and-out, with senior quarterback B.R. Holbrook pass on 4th-and-4 at the UNM 33 yard-line - the only UNM pass attempt in the entire second half -- was broken up by BSU's Tommy Smith. The Broncos were then able to run out the clock to seal the victory.Boise St. (3-1, 1-0) finished with 514 yards of total offense. Quarterback Joe Southwick sparked the Bronco offense with 311 yards on 24-of-34 passing with three touchdown sand no interceptions while Jay Ajayi racked up 118 yards rushing on six carries with one touchdown. D.J. Harper added 98 yards on 19 rushes.

Gautsche scored two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards on 11 carries for UNM. Kasey Carrier added 93 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown. Jhurell Pressley scored a touchdown and added 58 yards as New Mexico netted 330 of its 374 offensive yards using the run.In the first half, the Broncos defense did its job forcing three first half fumbles while the offense pulled off a pair of big plays in the half to give the Broncos and advantage they never relinquished. Southwick connected on a 50-yard pass play to Dallas Burroughs down the center of the UNM defense to finish the first quarter.

Boise scored two plays later when on a 10-yard TD strike from Southwick to Chris Potter to give BSU a 10-0 advantage.Jay Ajayi broke open the game in the with 3:52 left in the half when he broke free for a 71-yard run up the middle. Ajayi scored two plays later on a 1-yard run to make the score 25-0.

New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) twice moved into Broncos territory in the first half only to fumble away the ball to extinguish the drives. On the opening drive freshman Cole Gaustche fumbled on the Boise 39-yard line to set up the Broncos' first score. Then on their best drive of the half, UNM's Lamaar Thomas fumbled the ball away on the Boise 14-yard line.

Ajayi then ran the ball 71-yards the other way on the very next play."(At halftime I told them) ?Narrow the focus - don't think about all of the ramifications," said Davie. "'Don't think about what the final score might be. Don't think about how hardwe worked and we might not get anything out of it. Just go play the second half.'"New Mexico's second half comeback was sparked when UNM's Jeric Magnant forced Boise's Burroughs to fumble the kickoff to start the second half. The Lobos took just 6 plays to drive 26 yards and score their first touchown to make the score 25-7 in favor of Boise. On the ensuing drive, BSU drove all the way to the UNM 4-yard line but the Lobos forced Southwick to throw an incompletion on 4th-and-1 to force a turnover on downs.

The Lobos took the ball 96 yards on seven plays - including a 40-yard run by Gautsche -to score and cut the lead to 25-14 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.Boise St. drove for a touchdown on the next drive to make the score 32-14, but UNM would no go away. The Lobos put together another touchdown drive, punctuated by a 7-yard run by Gautsche to pull New Mexico to within 32-21 with 5:17 left. The Lobos forced a fumble on the next play to set up the final sequence.

"I really appreciate our team in the second half - I really appreciate the fight," saidDavie. "You're down 25-0 at halftime; they really pulled off a little bit right there at the end of the first half. Chris Peterson kind of sat on it a little bit. But the second half shows you what this (team) can be."

(AP) ? Jazz harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans quipped that his legs don't work but his mouth does after he was pushed onstage in a wheelchair to a standing ovation during the first of two Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts this weekend celebrating his 90 years. And once he put his harmonica to his lips, he more than lived up to his words.

Thielemans, who has been in poor health, had only played once this year at a summer jazz festival in his native Belgium and had canceled all his other U.S. dates. JALC programming director Jason Olaine said that up to the last minute, the producers were not sure whether Thielemans would even be able to play at the tribute concerts.

But energized by an enthusiastic audience and his musical friends, Thielemans rose to the occasion. Among those paying tribute were American jazz pianists Herbie Hancock and Kenny Werner, and three Brazilian stars, guitarist-vocalist Dori Caymmi, pianist-vocalist Eliane Elias and guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves ? all of whom appeared on Thielemans' two "Brasil Project" CDs in the early 1990s.

Thielemans, who turned 90 in April, was the first musician to create full-fledged jazz improvisations on the harmonica. But he's also made his mark in pop culture ? as the whistler on the Old Spice commercials; playing harmonica on the themes for "Sesame Street" and the film "Midnight Cowboy;" and in performances with Paul Simon and Billy Joel. He was ennobled by Belgium's king as a baron in 2001 and received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award in 2009, the highest U.S. jazz honor.

Werner opened Friday night's concert at the Rose Theater by playing two ballads ? Michel Legrand's "You Must Believe in Spring" and Bill Evans' "Very Early," which were on his 2001 duets album with Thielemans. Then Caymmi and Castro-Neves joined the band to play two Brazilian standards, including "Aquarela do Brasil," the title track of a 1969 recording Thielemans made with bossa nova singer Elis Regina that made him a hero to Brazilian musicians.

"When I heard Toots Thielemans for the first time, I'd like to tell you I was a baby," Caymmi said. "I was impressed like I was by Gil Evans, John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery."

Thielemans made his first appearance of the evening to play Caymmi's composition "Obsession" with the band; a Gershwin medley of "I Love You Porgy/Summertime" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Chega de Saudade," considered the first bossa nova song, with Werner; and Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" with Elias.

Hancock opened the second half by recalling that he first heard Thielemans when he was 14 years old with the George Shearing Quintet, a group he said greatly influenced him when he first became interested in jazz. He later played with Thielemans on records with Quincy Jones and others.

Hancock dedicated a spontaneously improvised piece ? with lots of classical influences ? to his Belgian friend, and then Thielemans joined him for a playful free-form duet loosely derived from Miles Davis' "Blue and Green." Thielemans stayed on stage to play a Sinatra medley ("All the Way/My Way") duet with Werner and joined with Elias to play her ballad "Moments," 'which he played on her first CD for Blue Note Records.

After Elias and Castro-Neves played several Brazilian tunes to give Thielemans a break, he returned one more time. He dedicated his composition "For My Lady" to his wife, Huguette.

"In this world I wouldn't certainly be here if it were not for my lady. She pays all the dues I should be paying," Thielemans said, addressing his wife in the audience before playing the tune with Werner and Castro-Neves.

All the musicians returned to the stage to play Thielemans' best known composition, "Bluesette," possibly the first swinging jazz waltz that was composed 50 years ago. Hancock and Elias engaged in some playful four-handed piano playing as the audience sang and clapped along with the musicians.

For an encore, Thielemans thanked everyone by caressingly playing "What a Wonderful World" ? a dedication to Louis Armstrong. He exited the stage standing proudly, supported by his fellow musicians, as the audience serenaded him with "Happy Birthday."

Tadpole shrimp a new pest of rice in the midsouthern United States

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Tadpole shrimp are pests of rice production systems in California and have recently been found impacting Missouri and Arkansas rice fields. The shrimp feed on rice seedlings and uproot them during foraging, and their foraging behavior causes water to become muddy, which reduces light penetration to submerged seedlings and delays the development of the rice plant.

In "Review of a New Pest of Rice, Tadpole Shrimp (Notostraca: Triopsidae), in the Midsouthern United States and a Winter Scouting Method of Rice Fields for Preplanting Detection," a new open-access article appearing in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, the authors provide information on the life cycle of tadpole shrimp, describe a new method for scouting for tadpole shrimp in rice fields, and provide scouting results and management implications.

In the article, the authors discuss the tadpole shrimp's biology, life cycle, and distribution range, as well as options for controlling it. The authors also note that after the rice seedling stage, tadpole shrimp can be beneficial because they also eat weed seedlings and small insects.

Mass. wants men to know they can get breast cancer

Gov. Deval Patrick wants Massachusetts men to know that they also can get breast cancer.

Men rarely get breast cancer, but those who do often don?t survive as long as women, mainly because they don?t even realize they can get it and are slow to recognize the warning signs.

A recent study found that men?s breast tumors were larger at diagnosis, more advanced and more likely to have spread to other parts of the body.

Many men have no idea that they can get breast cancer, and some doctors are in the dark, too, dismissing symptoms that would be an automatic red flag in women.

Patrick is hoping to change that in Massachusetts beginning Monday, when he signs a bill designating the third week of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

It's Flu Shot Season in Oklahoma

When the crimson and cream and orange and black pom poms begin to flutter, many an Oklahoman's mind and heart is turned to football. Football season is also flu season, and time for Oklahoma residents and the rest of the nation to prepare for the upcoming influenza season by getting their flu vaccine.

Influenza Vaccine Availability in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma City/County Health Department and Tulsa County Health Department will begin providing flu shots on Monday, Oct.1. Cleveland County Health Department officially begins influenza vaccinations also on Oct. 1, but will do so in its Norman and Moore clinics on a walk-in basis on Fridays only, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Some other county health departments, such as Cherokee County, have not yet received their supply of the vaccines, but will notify the community when they become available. Many pharmacies throughout the state also offer the flu vaccine.

Cost of Flu Shots

The cost of flu shots this year remain $25, except for the high-dose vaccine, which is $27. For individuals on Medicare or SoonerCare, or insurance that covers such preventive care, there is no charge.

The local health departments around the state also cover the flu vaccination fees for people whose income is 185 percent below the federal poverty level, for children who have no insurance or whose insurance doesn't cover the vaccine, children who are Native American or Alaskan natives, or people who are enrolled in HealthChoice or the Oklahoma Public Employees Health and Welfare plans, explained the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Cash, check or credit cards are acceptable forms of payment.

Those people with insurance or public assistance need to show their cards at time of service.

Who Should Get the Flu Shot?

Both the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are advising that everyone age six months and older should receive the flu vaccine this year. If immunized last year against the flu, a flu shot this year is still needed. The influenza vaccine for the 2012-13 flu season contains protection against H1N1, as did last year's vaccine, but also provides protection against two other virus strains that are likely to be prevalent in this new season.

Pregnant women, health care workers, caregivers and family members in a household with an infant under six months old are strongly advised to take the flu vaccine. People with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, or heart disease should also get the vaccine.

Despite this numerousness, domain names are limited by domain extensions, which are numerable and include the famed .com, .org, .gov, .edu, and .net. New Internet users still wonder what is domain and other similar questions, this is due to the common misconception regarding "cyber-squatting", where mass marketers and spammers hijack the address of a popular domain in order to re-direct those who search the popular phrase or website and end up in a completely different and unrelated website.

This type of malpractice has affected many new Internet users who often search for popular phrases or check out well known domain names, only to end up to another website elsewhere which is completely unrelated to their original search. Domain names, however, hold many benefits to their owners due to the fact they can be resold as the most popular domain names are often purchased by wealthy individuals or corporations with similar names who covet the special and unique domain name and buy it out for large sums of money. This is a process which guarantees high traffic rates to new businesses due to the pre-existing popularity of the domain name while requiring minimal marketing efforts on behalf of the new owners of the domain name. Re: AVG PC Tuneup Customer - AVG Forums

reallymadnow..

Yesterday evening, I spent over an hour in an ?online CHAT??.only to receive confirmation of the original license number - that is not being recognised.

This morning, I have spent two hours on the telephone speaking to two different agents (possibly) located in the USA or one of it?s off shore call centres?.and constantly being put on hold to await a technician?s response?.which doesn?t come....so I eventualy hung up - TWICE.

PROBLEM; I tried to update AVG Tune UP 2012.?on doing so, the original programme was removed from the laptop?and the new ?trial? version installed. When entering the existing license number?it simply transfers me to a web page where I can purchase the new version.

As the original version was valid until February 7th 2013.?I do not currently wish to purchase again.

I believe all it requires a new license number to be generated for the trial version that is currently on the laptop - that will take me to February 7th 2013 - when I would need to renew!

I am extremely disappointed with the difficulty experienced in trying to contact AVG UK direct?..and with the unacceptable level of delays - plus, the time kept on hold. My time is extremely valuable..... angry

If this is the standard of AVG customer support?.I regret that I will not renew in future (Our home & business runs two computers?.. each running AVG Internet Security - plus, AVG Tune Up) - and will no longer recommend to colleagues/friends.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Pet owners are using social media to post funny pictures of their dogs confessing their mistakes. It's called "dog shaming" and it's a viral trend that's making some people howl.

Dirty dogs are coming clean online, on sites like dog-shaming.com. While owners posting the?pictures of their pups may get laughs,?the dogs aren't really ashamed.

"Not one bit," said Sarah Babcock of the Richmond SPCA.?"I suspect there's an awful lot of dog treats doled out trying to get them to hold the sings for the photographers."

Babcock believes the trend is cute and harmless, but also says instead of just shaming, you can also teach your dogs to correct their behavior.

"I think, 'Wow! So many of these animals could be helped if the people really knew where to go for resources and could get the help they need," she said.

The Richmond?SPCA points out that it has a behavior help line and classes available, in case you want to do more than just shame your pet next time it makes a mess on the kitchen floor.

Rare Disease Science Challenge- Your Call to Action!

If you or a loved one is unlucky enough to be affected by a rare disease then it can be a continued uphill struggle. Your doctor will likely never have seen a case before which means you suffer with symptoms while awaiting diagnosis, and this can sometimes take years. Even when an accurate diagnosis is reached there may be few treatment options; the pharmaceutical companies just aren t interested in developing drugs to treat such a small market. For the majority (>95%) of the 7000 rare diseases there is no FDA approved therapy. Perhaps the cruelest twist of rare diseases, however, is that so many of the patients are young children. The NIH estimates that 50% of rare diseases affect children, and 30% of pediatric cases die before they reach their 5th birthday!

Collectively rare diseases are not rare. The fact is that while a disease might be labeled as rare , the number of persons suffering from one of the thousands of rare diseases is estimated at 10% of the population [1], or approx. 30 million people in the United States and 350 million people globally. Mainstream pharmaceutical companies have long ignored rare diseases. With the increasing de-centralization of scientific research, and the growth of the citizen science movement, however, there has never been a better time to tackle this problem head on. That s exactly what Assay Depot is doing by teaming up with the Rare Genomics Institute ? to bring awareness to the current broken system for diagnosing, treating and curing rare diseases.

The Rare Genomics Institute provides hope to children suffering with a rare disease. Most rare diseases are genetic in nature, caused by a mutation somewhere in the 3.2 billion bases of human DNA. The Rare Genomics Institute uses crowdfunding to pay for sequencing of the sick child s genome and then assembles a network of academic specialists who work together to identify the child s genetic mutation. Now Assay Depot has teamed up with The Rare Genomics Institute to take the process one-step farther, and go on the offensive with the Rare Disease Science Challenge.

The competition is open to researchers, foundations, or everyday people. Families with a child afflicted with a rare disease will have the opportunity to work with a network of academic researchers and use donated research services to develop research proposals tailored to their child?s needs. An expert panel of scientists will evaluate the research proposals with the final winner(s) selected by Facebook voting.

If we can improve the standard of care for just one rare disease we will bring relief to thousands of people, very likely children, who currently suffer. We think that is a dream worth fighting for. I am sure Chris and Hugh Hempel would agree. Their identical twin daughters, Addison and Cassidy, have been diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Type C, a rare, incurable and fatal genetic disease that causes progressive neurological deterioration. This week Global Genes, the leading rare and genetic disease patient advocacy organizations in the world, with the Kauffman Foundation is screening the Hempels story in Hollywood and revealing the grim truth; that diagnosing, treating and curing rare disease is moving at a tedious pace, and leaving heart-rending personal accounts in its path.

How can you help?

If you work for a company that offers research services or makes lab consumables, reagents or instruments ask them to get involved. The great thing about sponsorship is that it will cost your company very little, we re not asking for money, just a donation of time or resources. Does your company make antibodies? How about donating some production capacity? Do you sell DNA sequencers, or mass spec instruments? Could you run some samples in your lab for us?

If you put your mind to it there are a multitude of ways your company could get involved for very little cost, and in return get some great publicity, and help a very worthy cause.

For the rest of you please help publicize the Rare Disease Science Challenge, post it, blog it, tweet it, let s do everything we can to get the word out, and be a part of the solution.

Business Economics and the Digital Coupon | MyDealCompass ...

The adoption of smartphone growth is rapidly changing the retail shopping experience for both shoppers and businesses. Shoppers armed with their trusty smartphones continually want instant access to pricing information and special offers via their hand-held devices. A huge factor of this mega-trend is the use of digital coupons. This trend is further driven by group-buying, acceptance among the young and ease of redemption. Recessionary economics plays a role but the use of electronic coupons appears to be here to stay, regardless of the economic climate.

Those businesses who do not jump on board and join the digital coupon trend are risking a loss of business. Many businesses are hesitating to incorporate a large digital coupon plan into their marketing strategy because as the economic conditions improve they think shoppers will discontinue their reliance of retail coupons and savings codes. However, it is a fact that the couponing trend has continued to grow, even as the economy improves. Many shoppers now base their shopping activities where they can receive the best savings and discounts.

Also, the cost of advertising digital coupon deals online can be extensive with some of the coupon sites that are available. However, with myDealCompass, businesses can advertise their savings and discounts for a low monthly fee with no additional charges. Once their deal is live they can also tweek and change the savings as they see fit. This is an advantage that is not offered on other digital discount sites. As a result, there is a definite business advantage to join the digital coupon trend and give shoppers the instant access to deals that they search for.

Should You DIY Your Own Living Trust? - Washington Estate Planning

The trouble with do-it-yourself planning is
that even if your situation seems simple, there are many oddball things a
layman wouldn?t think of that can go wrong, especially with wills and trusts.

No one wants to pay for
something he or she can do themselves. Right? Refinishing your deck may be one
thing, but preparing your own estate plan may be a horse of a completely
different color.

Forbes addressed this matter last month in an article titled ?What Could Happen If You Write Your Own
Living Trust?
? As the title suggests, estate planning is not a DIY
project to take lightly and the article recounts several ?horror? stories of
layman-driven estate planning gone awry. I recommend reading the article, if
this is a project you are considering.

Admittedly, whenever an estate
planning attorney sounds the alarm against DIY estate planning, he or she runs
the real risk of coming across as self-serving. I get that. Nevertheless, your
estate plan is not your deck. No, your estate plan is the legally binding
roadmap to protect everyone you love and everything you have when you cannot.
Period.

If you botch the deck project,
there usually is a fix. In a worst case scenario, you re-sand and re-stain
(perhaps with a darker stain). If you botch your estate plan, on the other
hand, your minor children may not be reared by the guardians (backup parents)
of your choosing, may squander or lose their inheritance, and your spouse?s
next spouse may take it all anyway. The list goes on.

Additionally, if you botch the
estate plan, to whom will your loved ones turn for relief when you are gone?
Unless you carry ?errors and omissions? insurance, no one.

With many of life?s DIY
projects, life will go on for your loved ones regardless. When it comes to your
estate plan, however, is it really worth the risk?

PNoy's speeches: When the president speaks the language of the ...

Finally, we have a president of the republic who speaks the language of the people?both the educated and the less-educated, the haves and the have-nots. The publication of President Benigno S. Aquino III?s Kayo ang Boss Ko sa Daang Matuwid: Mga Piling Talumpati (Filipinas Institute of Translation, 2012) is a milestone in the history of the Philippines, especially in the development of Filipino as the national language.
?
The book consists of 37 speeches delivered by PNoy on various occasions all over the country. It opens with his inaugural address ?Tayo Na sa Daang Matuwid? on 30 June 2010, and ends with his third State of the Nation Address (SONA), entitled ?Sambayanang Filipino ang Gumawa ng Pagbabago,? delivered last 23 July 2012.
?
The speeches are arranged chronologically, serving as veritable records of the achievements of PNoy?s administration. Many of the speeches (especially the SONAs) are also well-supported expos?s of the excesses of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo?s administration.
?
Political and practical utilities aside, however, the speeches in this book are also examples of well-written and well-argued essays. The use of Filipino is almost elegant.
?
Mula rito, masasabi natin kung tunay nga ba siyang naging Pangulong maka-Filipino hindi lamang sa salita kundi lalo?t higit sa gawa,? according to the book editors Romulo P. Baquiran, Jr. and Michael M. Coroza.
?
Both editors are award-winning poets, and also recipients of the prestigious Southeast Asian Write Award from the royalty of Thailand. Baquiran is on the faculty of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Department of Filipino, while Coroza is with the Filipino Department of Ateneo de Manila University.
?
Filipino or Tagalog?
?
While the book is a laudable effort, I can already imagine the violent comments from non-Tagalog speakers about PNoy?s brand of Filipino. Why, it sounds very much like Tagalog! Is the president supporting, or worse, making it official?the Tagalization of our so-called national language? What is so national about it when it is just Tagalog?
?
Admittedly, this is a very difficult question to answer without fanning the flames of regionalism. Some would even call it ?nativism? in today?s language politics, which can be potentially emotionally messy.
?
But perhaps we should look at the issue from a historical perspective.
?
The idea of a national language was based on an indigenous language first mentioned in the 1935 Constitution, during the time of President Manuel Quezon. One year later, Quezon created the Surian ng Wikang Pambansa, which chose Tagalog as the basis of the national language.
?
As expected, the choice was questioned by the Visayans. Why not Cebuano, which is widely spoken in the Visayas and Mindanao? This became the start of the ?the war of the languages.?
?
Nevertheless, President Quezon was dubbed ?The Father of the National Language? despite his Tagalog-centric leanings, considering that he is from the Tagalog heartland of Tayabas. Everyone recognized that his vision to develop a national language is an achievement in itself.
?
In the 1987 Constitution, under the presidency of Corazon Cojuangco Aquino, the national language is clearly named?Filipino. It is still Tagalog-based, but there is a conscious effort to have it developed and enriched by other Philippine languages as well as other foreign languages like Spanish, English, and Arabic.
?
This means that the national language is still more an ideal than reality. Nonetheless, academic institutions like the University of the Philippines Sentro ng Wikang Filipino (SWF), aside from the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino under the Office of the President, are seriously and actively attempting to make the concept of the national language real and tangible.
?
For example, the SWF in U.P. Iloilo, first directed by Palanca Hall of Famer Leoncio P. Deriada, gathered words and concepts in the three languages of Panay, namely Aklanon, Kinaray-a, and Hiligaynon. Deriada also gave creative writing workshops in the different schools in Western Visayas, where he promoted his brand of Filipino that he calls ?Visayan-laced Filipino.? This is a type of Filipino that is Tagalog-based, but is open to vocabularies and syntax from the Visayan languages.
?
From Gloria to PNoy
?
PNoy?s Filipino today is definitely Tagalog-based. Maybe he should, with the help of his speech writers, consider incorporating non-Tagalog words into his future speeches. Perhaps, if he is giving a speech in Cebu, he should use more Cebuano words. If he is in Iloilo, why not use Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a words? If he is in Ilocandia, why not put Ilocano words in his speech? And so on.
?
Or maybe we can just leave PNoy in his Tagalog-based Filipino. Since he was brought up in Metro Manila, he cannot help but be Manila-centric and Tagalog-centric in his language. Perhaps, we should wait for another great president who can speak several Philippine languages, and mix these languages in order to create a real and more representative national language that would truly be Filipino in form and content.
?
Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo could have been this kind of president. I heard her once giving a radio interview when she was still President. It was broadcast all over the Philippines, and she was answering questions in Tagalog, Kapampangan, Cebuano, and Hiligaynon. Sayang, she squandered her chance to be a president who would champion the national language.
?
Whatever his future holds until 2016, once he leaves office, PNoy will perhaps be remembered as the president who spoke the language of the people. After all, more than 90 percent of the population can understand and speak Tagalog-based Filipino because of mass media.
?
? YA/VS, GMA News

Non-Profit or Business ? Your Web Host is the Best Business Partner

The mission for all non-profit organizations is to create awareness of an issue or mission. With a need to draw attention to child abuse, The Lincoln County Children?s Advocacy Center (www.childrensadvocacycenter.net) in Newport, Oregon is no different. Unfortunately, this goal presented quite the challenge for the organization as its details were buried deep inside the county?s website. The limited visibility and accessibility caused the group to re-evaluate its? strategy. They knew that in order to effectively provide information about their cause, they would need to create a more impressive online presence.

?The Center wanted to provide education to the public about child abuse, prevention and opportunities to support the small, non-profit agency,? said Pam Salisbury of the Lincoln County Children?s Advocacy Center. The ability to express this message and great cause within their provided resources was extremely difficult. Searching for alternative solutions, the group was cautious to develop a website as they believed that they did not have the resources or skills needed to succeed.

?We thought a website for the organization would be too expensive and overly complicated for the average person to maintain,? Salisbury said. A sense of relief came when Salisbury explored Web hosting options and found 1&1 Internet. ?The 1&1 MyWebsite was cost effective, easy to maintain and provided responsive support.?

With a successful Web presence, the Lincoln County Children?s Advocacy Center can now effectively raise awareness and gain the attention it deserves.

By taking the leap into the online world, other non-profit organizations or businesses can see the same success that the Lincoln County Children?s Advocacy Center experienced. By choosing the right Web host as your business partner, your company will be accessible to the masses in no time.

  • Inclusive Solutions ? Bundling your online needs within one package can save on cost while streamlining your invoices. All businesses should have a specific domain name and set of domain-specific email addresses. Therefore, look at options that include such features within the hosting package as well as marketing tools to help leverage your business online.
  • Technical Features ? Factors like security, data storage, Web space and bandwidth, or Web traffic, can affect how well your website operates and adapts as your business grows. Be sure that you commit to a solution which offers unlimited or high allocation to these features.
  • Budget Friendly ? Not all businesses share the same budget for their online strategy. Most hosts provide a variety of online solutions to fit a wide range of price points. Be sure to pick one that will fit your needs and monetary restrictions.
  • Potential to Upgrade ? You may be just starting your business but you should still explore the more complex options with Web hosts. As your company grows, you may demand more from your provider so be sure that the host you chose can accommodate your upgrading needs ? even if it is a few years down the line.

World's largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

Denis Balibouse / Reuters

A sign is pictured in front of Vitol Group trading commodities company building in Geneva in this October 4, 2011 file photo.

By Luke Pachymuthu, Randy Fabi and Chen Aizhu, Reuters

SINGAPORE/BEIJING?- Vitol, the world's largest oil trader, is buying and selling Iranian fuel oil, undermining Western efforts to choke the flow of petrodollars to Tehran and put pressure on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Vitol last month bought 2 million barrels of fuel oil, used for power generation, from Iran and offered it to Chinese traders, Reuters established in interviews with 10 oil trading, industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Swiss-based Vitol is not obliged to comply with a ban imposed in July by the European Union on trading oil with Iran because Switzerland decided not to match EU and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

The company earlier in the year stopped trading Iranian crude oil from its main European offices before the July 1 EU embargo deadline. But the trading sources said it has continued to deal in Iranian fuel oil from the Middle East.

The tale of the cargo of Iranian fuel oil involves tanker tracking systems being switched off, two ship-to-ship transfers, and blending of the oil with fuel from another source to alter the cargo's physical specification.

Privately-held Vitol SA is led by its long-time CEO Ian Taylor, a Briton. Taylor was among leading donors to Britain's ruling Conservative Party named in March by the Prime Minister's office as having dined with David Cameron at his private apartment in Downing Street amid the fall-out from a "cash for access" party funding scandal. Britain is a vociferous critic of Tehran's nuclear program and a leading advocate of the EU sanctions.

Swiss loophole
Vitol has said previously it is in compliance with sanctions against Iran, but has declined to say whether or not it would follow the strict EU regulations rather than Switzerland's.

Rival Swiss-based traders Glencore and Trafigura said in July they had halted all Iranian oil trade, even though the Swiss government opted against following measures imposed by Washington and Brussels.

The measures have halved OPEC member Iran's crude oil export revenues, devaluing the rial currency and bringing financial hardship to millions of Iranians.

On top of the EU ban, Iran's four biggest oil buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - have reduced their imports by at least a fifth to secure exemptions from the threat of U.S. financial sanctions on their companies.

Vitol last year earned record revenue of $297 billion, a near-five-fold increase since 2004. It does not reveal profits.

Fuel oil is a small part of its trading portfolio, accounting for $24 billion of revenue last year compared to $105 billion from crude and $100 billion from other refined products.

Profit margins on oil trade are typically very low, but traders said Iran's difficulties in finding buyers because of sanctions are likely to have made for a fat profit margin for trading its fuel oil.

Ship-to-ship
Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil early this month in a ship-to-ship transfer off Malaysia from a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) vessel, the Leadership, onto a Vitol-chartered tanker, the Ticen Ocean.

The Ticen Ocean was sub-contracted by Vitol for floating storage off the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas from Titan Petrochemicals, a Hong Kong company which itself hired it from shipowner Frontline of Norway.

Frontline said Titan had told it the ship was not used to store Iranian oil. "Our only counterpart in this matter is Titan and they have said it is not correct that there has been Iranian oil on the boat," said Frontline CEO Jens Martin Jensen.

Titan did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

The Leadership left Iran's main oil export terminal at Kharg Island during the week of August 23, passing through the Strait of Malacca before disappearing from freight tracking systems off the Malaysian coast on September 4. Since sanctions were imposed, Iranian vessels have frequently switched off the onboard 'black-box' transponders used in the shipping industry to monitor vessel movements.

Industry sources in Tanjung Pelepas who monitor shipping transfer operations in Malaysian waters said Vitol later brought alongside another tanker, the Speranza, to replace the Ticen Ocean as floating storage. The Speranza, owned by China's Sino Shipping Holdings, arrived at Tanjung Pelepas on September 13-14, Reuters data shows.

Vitol also transferred some of its fuel oil from the Ticen Ocean between September 11-12 to another vessel, the Kamari I, according to Reuters data. That cargo was delivered to Vitol's storage terminal on the Malaysian island of Tanjung Bin, inside Tanjung Pelepas port, one trading source said.

'Special blend'
Traders said the company then blended the oil in storage with fuel oil sourced from Europe, calling it a "special blend" and offered it to Chinese traders. Reuters was given a copy of the specifications of the cargo on offer.

Vitol first asked a $30 premium to Singapore's benchmark 180-centistoke fuel oil price, said a Chinese industry executive who manages some of China's many small, independent refineries, known as teapots. That would have valued the 2-million-barrel cargo at about $250 million.

"Because the offer was too high, our people didn't really carry on the talks," the Chinese executive said. "Vitol also appeared not in a hurry to sell, so was not being aggressive."

Two Asian refinery buyers who were then offered the oil said the asking price was cut to a $12-$14 premium to Singapore benchmark prices, or around $175 million in total.

"Vitol is offering the cargo as a special blend to teapot refiners in Shandong," said a China-based trader. "No one's agreed to buy the Vitol cargo. I declined because I wasn't sure of the quality and specifications."

At the time of publication it is not known whether Vitol had agreed a deal to sell the oil.

Insurance
Vitol's use of the Ticen Ocean to store Iranian oil could put the tanker's insurance at risk. The vessel is insured by the North of England P&I Association.

The EU's oil embargo bans EU insurers who underwrite around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet from providing cover for ships carrying Iranian oil.

Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, which acts as manager for the North of England P&I Association, said it would not provide cover for tankers storing or transporting Iranian oil.

"We would not expect to continue to insure any fleet actively engaged in this trade," he said, but declined comment specifically on the Ticen Ocean.
