Rural Union County neighbors worry about losing paramedics

UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- Neighbors of rural Union County crowded into the Lanes Creek Volunteer Fire Station Thursday night, concerned that they were going to lose the services of trained paramedics who were there to provide a first response at any given moment.

Three paramedics who drive what is called a 'Quick Response Vehicle' are stationed full time at the fire station.

"My husband had two calls from this station and they were there within five minutes. It probably saved his life," said Melba Zimmerman as she waited for the meeting to start.

Union County Emergency Medical Services Director Scott Shew said it has become necessary to make some cuts, and a study showed the paramedics could better be used on fully equipped ambulances that are stationed around Monroe -- even though the trip down to the eastern and southern reaches of the county could take 12 minutes or more.

"It became evident that this quick response vehicle was one of the least utilized vehicles and resources that we have," said Shew.

But try telling that to Margie Davis, who said the paramedics from Lanes Creek Fire Station saved her life.

"I couldn't breath one night and I have heart problems. When I called they got there in 10 minutes," she said.

Union County's Manager, Cindy Coto said, "We are here to listen to those concerns and to see if there is some way to resolve them."

A decision on the future of the paramedics is expected to be made by the end of the year.

house designs - Ensure a Home Renovation That's Worthy of Your ...

You should go all the way and consider a new house design for your next home renovation. The added expenses make all the difference, especially if you're forced to strip down the walls to expose and treat a pest infestation. Renovation projects involve several phases, but you can always hire someone to handle all the details, from the blueprint to the finishing touches. The design should be your priority, though, since all the other aspects comply with the floor plan. You don't have to hire an architect if you're only renovating the first floor or your backyard, but you'll need a good home builder who'll execute the details in time and within the quoted budget.

You can always look for home plans online if you're stuck with a tight budget. There are sites which let you download blueprints for a fee, which is recommended if you know a little about renovation and you're certain the specifications match with your project. A house designer can ensure the changes are structurally sound, though. He can also recommend themes that complement the houses in your neighborhood and your local climate. Many home designers also have connections to contractors and builders, so you'll likely get a good deal out of the referrals and packaged services your designer offers.

Having a floor plan and home design is but part of the process; the actual renovation will eat up most of your budget. Make sure you make the most out of the expenses and ask for detailed breakdown of the quote. Contractors usually offer ballpark quotes until you ask for specifics, especially if you're hiring their services to renovate your house and design it. A detailed quote usually comes with consultation fees, but the amount is a trifle compared to the inflated estimate you'll receive otherwise.

You still have to consider the variables of the project. If you want to include details which aren't covered by the recommendations, then you'll have to shoulder costs which exceed the quote. Most people insist on having their preferred bathroom or kitchen fixtures installed, especially if the package only includes stock installations. You can also cut down costs by choosing more affordable fixtures, like cedar cupboards instead of oak or mahogany, vinyl paneling instead of marble tiling. A fixed quote ensures you'll have everything covered so you can reallocate the expenses where these matter the most.

Builders also require slack to cover for expenses which can't be included in the quote. These are provisional costs determined during the renovation project, such as a structural flaw discovered on the foundation or the need to replace wall paneling that's crawling with black mold or termites. A provisional sum should be your builder's best guesstimate, and it shouldn't be confused with the ballpark quote of the initial consultation. Again, this provision works both ways. If the builder determines your house can do without aspects of renovation detailed on the fixed quote, then you're entitled to receive the corresponding credit and savings. Choosing house designs shouldn't be too difficult if you hire people who'll take over the small details. Hire the best designer and contractor and ensure your renovation is a worthwhile investment.

Consider house designs by Peter Downes if you?re looking for themes on your next renovation. House designers offer plans that make the most out of your floor space and climate, so choose consultation services and make your investment count.

Beauty Pageants, A Platform To Enhance Or Exploit Beauty?

Beauty pageant can be said is another form of entertaining people when it comes to various forms of entertainment in the arts and creative industry.

Even before the colonial masters (The British) had power to determine and influence the Ghanaian culture, elders and chiefs of various ethnic groups had a ethics and values of determining the beauty of a Ghanaian woman through the rich values and rites within all the ten
regions in the country.

In the case of the Ghanaian entertainment industry, the music industry has made huge impact as far as the movie, arts and crafts and events are concerned in Ghana.

However beauty pageants if not recently have gained some level of patronage all across the country with different shades of rules and engagement making it booming business for event organisers.

A critical preview placed on the various beauty pageants being organized in the country has raised some question on the minds of critics over the number of beauty pageants being organized
in the country.

However, some pageants which can be mention include, Miss Malika, Ghana?s Most Beautiful also Miss Ghana, have placed arguments in the minds of most Ghanaians as to whether their presences have made the Ghanaian culture a better one or a worst one so to speak.

One school of thought with its prions and corms are seeking to find out, whiles projecting the beauty which lies in the Ghanaian women, are these women being sexually abused or better still exploited to the advantages of the event organisers?

Day in and out many innocent young ladies all over the country are being bombarded with all kinds of new versions of pageantry only to seek their sponsorships which enriches some individuals but not the crown winner.

A clear observation made by this reporter brings to bear the euphoria and excitements such events brings to the Ghanaian society in their comfort homes needs to be critically analyzed as to its benefits to the current Ghanaian society.

One can tell from the criteria being used to select these women are mostly being championed by young women with the exception of few who allow elderly women to participant in events such as Ghana?s Most Beautiful.

In making this reportage a bit humor, there are various shapes and sizes of young ladies such as plus size ladies, slim and slender, busty and heavily shaped ladies are the kinds of beauty which
can be found in the streets of Accra.

In making this argument valid in the eyes of the ordinary Ghanaian audience, this reporter took the trouble of enquiring from some organiser?s point of view why such event and its relevance on the Ghanaian culture so far.

Speaking an interview with the chronicle, the Brands, Events and Promotions Manager of TV3 Mr. Felix Phil Gontoh has observed that, Ghana?s Most Beautiful is a well recognised and accepted event which has gained the thumbs up of all Ghanaian from all walks of life in the
country.

According to him, the concept being adopted by the management of TV3 from the ten regions is to entertain and educate the public on the Ghanaian culture whiles keeping the rich heritage.

?The impact of the show in the country is very great which has changed the face of the show from elderly women to younger women participating in the show. The younger ones are able to aculeate and express them selves in their local language which are important values of each
regional culture?, he added.

Mr. Gontoh said traditional leaders from all the ten regions and also some African countries have endorsed the show by contributing their quota through grooming and training of the ladies.

He cited that, the show has promoted the Ghanaian tourism industry which has gained prominence in the United Kingdom, USA and Europe which would soon be held in countries mention above.

?The opinion of the public is being shaped by the critics of the judges on the show. The SMS being voted by the public is 100 percent with the public. The opinions of some audience or family members are different from others. The show is left in the hands of the public to decide who emerges as the winner at the end of the day?, Mr. Gontoh stressed.

Protein linked to increased risk of heart failure and death in older adults

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A protein known as galectin-3 can identify people at higher risk of heart failure, according to new research supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. This research is based on work from the NHLBI's Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and has been the leading source of research findings about heart disease risk factors.

Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot fill with enough blood and/or pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. Galactin-3 has recently been associated with cardiac fibrosis, a condition in which scar tissue replaces heart muscle, and cardiac fibrosis plays an important role in the development of heart failure.

Heart failure carries enormous risk for death or a lifetime of disability and often there are few warning signs of impending heart failure. Measuring levels of galectin-3 in the blood may offer a way to identify high-risk individuals who could benefit from treatments to prevent debilitating heart failure and death. Early identification of predisposed individuals would allow treatment to begin long before heart failure develops and could help people at high risk for heart failure to live longer, more active lives.

Galectin-3 levels were measured in 1996-1998 as part of a routine examination of 3,353 participants enrolled in the Offspring Cohort of the Framingham Heart Study. At the time of measurement the average age of the participants was 59 years old. During an average follow-up of 11 years, 166 participants (5.1 percent) had a first heart failure event. Among the 25 percent of people with the highest galectin-3 levels (ranging from 15.4 to 52.1 nanograms per milliliter) the annual rate of heart failure was 12 per 1,000 people compared with 3 per 1,000 people for the 25 percent of participants with the lowest galectin-3 levels (ranging from 3.9 to 12 nanograms per milliliter). Fifty-three percent of participants were women.

Spironolactone and other related drugs believed to counteract cardiac fibrosis have been shown to improve outcomes in heart failure patients. Future research will be needed to determine whether treatment with these or other drugs can benefit healthy patients with elevated galectin-3 levels.

Second-quarter growth revised up, Fed still seen in play

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The economy fared slightly better than initially thought in the second quarter but the pace of growth remained too slow to shut the door on further monetary easing from the Federal Reserve.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday, as stronger export growth offset a pull-back in restocking by businesses wary of sluggish domestic demand.

That was up from the government's initial estimate of 1.5 percent growth released last month and in line with economists' expectations. The economy grew at a 2.0 percent pace in the January-March period.

A second report showed contracts to buy previously owned homes in July rose to their highest level since April 2010, suggesting the housing market recovery was gaining traction.

While the composition of economic activity was fairly favorable, growth remains well below the 2 to 2.5 percent rate required every quarter to hold the unemployment rate steady, which could compel policymakers at the U.S. central bank to offer additional stimulus at their September 12-13 meeting.

"It shows slightly better government spending and consumer spending but overall the data suggest the economy stays in slow growth mode and is not likely to change," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital in New York.

"This certainly strengthens the hand of the Fed to aid the economy."

U.S. stocks were little changed on the data, but Treasury debt prices fell. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies.

Speculation the Fed would loosen policy further had been dampened by a pick-up in job growth and a rebound in retail sales in July but other data on business spending and inflation supported more action.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke could offer more clarity on the near-term outlook for monetary policy when he gives a speech at the Kansas City Fed's high-profile gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming at the end of the week.

The jobless rate rose to 8.3 percent in July from 8.2 percent the prior month. The weak economy could be a stumbling block to President Barack Obama's quest for a second term in November elections.

EXPORTS UP, INVENTORIES RETREAT

Second-quarter economic growth was revised up to show strong export growth, despite slowing global demand. Import growth was the smallest in a year. Trade contributed 0.32 percentage point to GDP growth instead of subtracting a third of a percentage point, as previously reported.

That helped to offset the drag from inventories. Business inventories increased $49.9 billion instead of $66.3 billion and subtracted 0.23 percentage point from GDP growth in the April-June period. However, the careful management of stocks can be a boost to the economy in the third quarter.

Excluding inventories, GDP rose at a 2.0 percent rate rather than 1.2 percent. In the first quarter, final sales of goods and services produced in the United States increased at a 2.4 percent pace.

There were also upward revisions to growth in consumer spending, which was bumped up to a 1.7 percent pace from the previously reported 1.5 percent. That was a step-down from the 2.4 percent pace recorded in the first quarter, however.

The revision to consumer spending was to account for stronger growth in services than previously thought.

Investment in construction of nonresidential structures was stronger than previously reported. But growth in business investment in equipment and software was lowered to a 4.7 percent pace, the slowest since the third quarter of 2009, from 7.2 percent previously.

Growth in spending by businesses on equipment and software has slowed sharply from a peak of 18.3 percent in the third quarter of last year.

That appears to have intensified early this quarter, with a measure of business spending plans falling sharply in July. The pullback likely reflects worries of deep government spending cuts and higher taxes scheduled to kick in at the start of 2013, as well as troubles from the debt crisis in Europe.

"There's no question that as we look toward the end of the year and the risk presented by federal spending cuts and tax increases, the economy remains in a vulnerable window," said Jim Baird, chief investment strategist at Plante Moran Financial Advisors in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The report also showed that after-tax corporate profits rose at a 1.1 percent rate after sinking 8.6 percent in the first quarter.

Growth in spending on homebuilding was cut to an 8.9 percent rate from 9.7 percent. Still, the housing market is on a rebound, with home construction, sales and prices firming in recent months.

"While the level of housing activity remains depressed, housing has turned the corner," said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

Although government spending declined in the second quarter, the drop was not as deep as previously reported. Defense outlays fell at a 0.1 percent rate instead of 0.4 percent.

Despite consumer spending being bumped up, inflation pressures remained muted in the second quarter.

A price index for personal spending rose at an unrevised 0.7 percent rate, the slowest pace since the second quarter of 2010. It rose 2.5 percent in the first quarter.

A core measure that strips out food and energy costs advanced at an unrevised 1.8 percent pace, slowing down from 2.2 percent in the prior quarter.

Best Introduction to Anthropology Syllabus - Four Fields ...

Best Introduction to Anthropology Syllabus Four FieldsAfter posting my four fields Introduction to Anthropology syllabus to the American Anthropological Association Teaching Materials Exchange, I?ve been updating my Four Fields Textbook Review concentrating on the themes of human nature, race, and evolution.

I?ve returned to the Teaching Materials exchange in search of the best Introduction to Anthropology syllabus for a comprehensive four fields course, and I?ve also scoured the internet to find a syllabus to go with each of the textbooks I reviewed. Unfortunately besides my own there is only one other four fields Introduction to Anthropology syllabus at the AAA Teaching Materials Exchange. It?s by Angela Kristin VandenBroek, author of the very helpful How to be an Anthropologist blog. (VandenBroek uses the condensed Kottak, which I had not previously reviewed, but here is an updated review of Window on Humanity, 5th Edition.)

Please consider posting an Introduction to Anthropology syllabus at the AAA Teaching Materials Exchange. After some initial fill-in-the-blank text boxes, you can upload the syllabus as a pdf or Word document.

I post results below, concentrating on courses that are updated and publicly available. Thank you to all these instructors for their teaching and posting materials online. Please let me know what I?m missing.

Introduction to Anthropology, Jonathan S. Tomhave
This course attempts to survey and explain some of the variety found in the human condition around the world. It is both a scientific and a humanistic endeavor to explain differences and similarities in appearance, language, culture, and perspectives. It incorporates basic biology and physiology, history, geography, sociology, evolution, and sometimes a suspended value judgment, in order to understand why people are who they are, and why they do what they do.
Textbook: Anthropology (Ember, Ember, Peregrine)

General Anthropology, Angela Kristin VandenBroek
This course introduces the physical, archaeological, linguistic, and ethnological fields of anthropology. Topics include human origins, genetic variations, archaeology, linguistics, primatology, and contemporary cultures. Upon completion, students should be able to
demonstrate an understanding of the four major fields of anthropology.
Textbook: Window on Humanity: A Concise Introduction to Anthropology (Kottak)

Introduction to Anthropology: Online Course, Jason Miller
This course provides a holistic and comparative study of the human condition through a survey of the four subfields of anthropology: biological anthropology, archaeology, anthropological linguistics, and cultural anthropology.
Textbook: Anthropology: What Does It Mean to Be Human? (Lavenda and Schultz)

Introduction to Anthropology, Beth O?Leary
This course is a general introduction to Anthropology. The objective is to think about what it means to be human. The course will cover the subdisciplines of biological/physical, cultural, archaeological and linguistic anthropology. We will explore the origins of humans, evolutionary theories, the biological diversity of peoples in the past and the present. We will look at what culture is and compare different cultures in the world.
Textbook: Anthropology: The Human Challenge (Haviland, Prins, Walrath, McBride)

Introduction to Anthropology, Genesis Snyder
This course is a general survey of anthropology as an academic discipline. Anthropology can be defined in many ways, but broadly defined it is the study of culture and the human condition in the past, present, and future. During the semester, we will examine each of anthropology?s four subfields: physical (the study of human genetic and cultural evolution and diversity), archaeology (the study of past human material culture), linguistics (the study of human language, communication, and writing systems), and cultural (the study of human society and culture). In addition, we will examine various issues and questions that set the scope for contemporary anthropological thought. A primary goal of the course is to help students develop skills that will encourage them to better understand and respond to the diversity of human possibilities via anthropological approaches aimed at understanding the human condition and the relationships/intersections/connections between culture, biology, and environmental influences.
Textbook: Anthropology: Appreciating Human Diversity (Kottak)

Introduction to Anthropology, Roger Lohmann
This is an introductory survey of general anthropology, the study of all aspects of humankind in all places and times. It presents and synthesizes approaches and findings of anthropology?s four subfields to present a holistic account of humanity. Biological anthropology concentrates on the physical and evolutionary characteristics of humans as members of the animal kingdom. Archaeological anthropology studies the human past through material remains and the context in which they are found. Cultural anthropology documents and compares customs and traditions among contemporary peoples. Linguistic anthropology focuses on the characteristics, development, and use of languages.

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS ? (Marketwire) ? 08/30/12 ? IBC 2012, Verimatrix, the specialist in securing and enhancing revenue for multi-screen digital TV services around the globe, today announced that Russia?s TVzavr is securing its over-the-top (OTT) video-on-demand (VoD) service with the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS?) for Internet TV. Moscow-based TVzavr is an online aggregator of professional video content that welcomes more than two million visitors per month, with a 60 percent return rate.

TVzavr boasts one of Russia?s most comprehensive VoD catalogs, making revenue security a critical consideration. The company delivers video to multiple consumer devices over unmanaged networks, mandating not only robust security for on-demand content, but also support for the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol for delivery to smart TVs, set top boxes (STBs) and iOS and Android-based tablets and devices.

?We conducted an extensive analysis of the various existing CAS/DRM systems on the market and ultimately chose the Verimatrix solution, in part because of its reputation of reliability, proven track record and mature partner ecosystem,? stated Alexander Belenov, general director of online cinema at TVzavr. ?VCAS for Internet TV allows us to broadcast content in protected mode to a wide range of devices enabling our customers to create their own world of entertainment. Providing extra layers of protection into the standard HLS protocol is a critical differentiator to power our on-demand services.?

VCAS for Internet TV, a key option powered by the VCAS platform, addresses these requirements by providing a complete digital TV security solution for OTT services over networks implementing HLS. Featuring multi-format support, VCAS for Internet TV secures OTT services to multiple screens and across multiple network types, including both broadcast (linear) and VoD delivery modes.

?Maximizing the monetization of a compelling content bouquet across a multi-screen delivery environment can be a complex undertaking,? said Steve Oetegenn, chief sales and marketing officer at Verimatrix. ?TVzavr recognized the importance of having a robust revenue security platform at the core of its multi-screen initiative. We look forward to working with the company to further extend its already strong value proposition by enabling new services and increasing quality of experience (QoE) for the subscriber.?

Verimatrix will be demonstrating its robust revenue security solutions at IBC 2012, RAI Amsterdam, 7-11 September 2012. Visit booth #4.B54 to see demos of how the VCAS? architecture addresses current and future business and technical challenges.

West Nile virus cases hit 1,590; death toll at 66

Reported by Tiffany Chao, M.D., ABC News Medical Unit:

Reports of West Nile virus infection in the country now total 1,590, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday - an increase of more than 40 percent in one week alone.

CDC officials also reported during a Wednesday afternoon teleconference that 66 people have died from the disease so far. Of all of the cases reported thus far, 889 - or 56 percent - are classified as neuroinvasive, meaning patients develop meningitis, encephalitis or paralysis.

These figures represent a striking increase from last week's report of 1,118 cases, 629 of which were neuroinvasive, and 41 deaths.

Still, officials say they anticipated that these numbers would go up over time.

"This increase is not unexpected," said Dr. Lyle R. Petersen, director of the division of vector-borne infections diseases from the CDC, during the teleconference. "In fact, the total numbers will continue to rise through October."

He also said that while the overall numbers will continue to accumulate throughout mosquito season, he expects the incidence of infections to have peaked in mid- to late-August. This peak may vary between Northern and Southern states.

CDC officials estimate that, based on current numbers, the final tally of overall U.S. cases will likely be similar to the number of cases seen in 2002 and 2003, during which time more than 3,000 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus and more than 260 deaths were reported.

While all 48 continental states have reported cases of West Nile infections, more than 70 percent of the reported cases are in Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Michigan.

Texas has been hardest hit, with 783 reported cases - nearly half of the total number documented thus far. The health department in Texas has been vigilant about preventing further infections through aerial spraying.

"Assuming a normal progression [of cases], this will be our worst year with West Nile," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. He highlights the grim statistics in Texas. "In 2003, there were 439 neuroinvasive cases, compared 416 already this year. In 2003, there were 40 deaths, and now we're at 31."

Since the CDC does not recommend routine testing of people with West Nile fever, it is likely that there are far more infections than the current numbers suggest. Approximately 80 percent of patients infected with West Nile virus will not develop any type of illness. The remaining 20 percent experience symptoms including fever, headache, malaise, body aches, and occasionally a rash or swollen lymph nodes.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile. The disease itself may run its course in as short as a few days or as long as several weeks.

The virus is most dangerous when it becomes neuroinvasive; in these cases, patients can experience symptoms as severe as coma, seizures, muscle weakness and paralysis. The CDC estimates that only about 1 in 150 people who contract West Nile virus will develop the neuroinvasive form, but nearly all of these patients will require hospitalization.

Of these, those with encephalitis are in the greatest danger, as they are frequently left with severe neurologic deficits. Ten percent of patients who develop encephalitis die. Of the patients who develop paralysis from the disease, one third will recover nearly completely, one third will be left with residual weakness, and one third will not recover.

CDC officials said it is unlikely that Hurricane Isaac will play a role in the severity of the outbreak.

"Based on previous experience, floods and hurricanes do not result in increased transmission of West Nile Virus," said Petersen. He notes that although there will likely be no noticeable effect on the current epidemic, a small increase had been noted in some areas of Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, likely because of increased outdoor exposure when houses were severely damaged.

In light of the ongoing risk, the CDC encourages everyone to protect themselves from mosquitoes. While many health departments have made mosquito-control efforts, such as aerial and ground spraying, people are encouraged to protect themselves from mosquito bites using basic techniques.

"Use insect repellents, wear long-sleeved clothing during dawn and dusk, install and repair window screens, use air-conditioners when possible, empty standing water, and support local community mosquito control programs," Peterson says.

There is currently no vaccine to protect humans from the West Nile virus, although four effective vaccinations exist for horses. A few of related vaccines are in early clinical trials (Phase I and II) in humans, which have been successful. However, no vaccine has yet been taken to Phase III clinical trials.

World leaders squirm as Iran summit turns tense

A showpiece summit hosted by Iran stumbled as soon as it opened on Thursday when the head of the UN pressed Tehran on its nuclear stand, and Egypt's new leader publicly sided with Syria's opposition.

The double challenge, before the leaders and delegates of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement, upset Iran's plans to portray the two-day summit as a diplomatic triumph over Western efforts to isolate it.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei opened the event with a speech blasting the United States as a hegemonic meddler and Israel as a regime of "Zionist wolves."

He also stated that his country "is never seeking nuclear weapons" and accused the UN Security Council, under US influence, of exerting an "overt dictatorship" over the world.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who looked irritated at Khamenei's remarks, shot back that Iran should boost global confidence in its nuclear activities by "fully complying with the relevant (UN) Security Council resolutions and thoroughly cooperating with the IAEA," the UN's nuclear watchdog.

He warned about the current state of bellicose rhetoric coming from Israel and Iran, saying "a war of words can quickly spiral into a war of violence."

Egypt's new President Mohamed Morsi -- making the first visit to Iran by an Egyptian head of state since the 1979 Islamic revolution -- in turn embarrassed his hosts by voicing support for the opposition in Syria, which is fighting the Damascus regime unwaveringly backed by Iran.

"The revolution in Egypt is the cornerstone for the Arab Spring, which started days after Tunisia and then it was followed by Libya and Yemen and now the revolution in Syria against its oppressive regime," Morsi said.

That contradicted the line put out by Damascus and Tehran, which assert that the Syrian uprising is a "terrorist" plot masterminded by the United States and regional countries.

Morsi's address prompted a walkout by the Syrian government delegation and drew a sharp response from Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, who accused the Egyptian leader of inciting further bloodshed in Syria.

Iran's state media failed to mention the contentious parts of Ban and Morsi's speeches in their coverage of the summit.

Morsi reportedly had a short one-on-one with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before leaving Tehran, in which they discussed Syria and possibility of reviving ties.

The summit to-and-fro over Iran's nuclear ambitions had its roots in an unusually frank meeting Ban held with Khamenei and Ahmadinejad after arriving on Wednesday.

Ban told them Iran needed to provide "concrete" steps to ease the international showdown which has raised the spectre of airstrikes on nuclear facilities, threatened by both Israel and the United States.

Tensions have been raised by the International Atomic Energy Agency unveiling a new Iran "task force" to scrutinise Tehran's nuclear programme and its compliance with UN resolutions.

Additionally, the latest IAEA report on Iran's nuclear progress was expected to be released this week -- possibly even during the Tehran summit.

The report is said to highlight expanded enrichment in Iran and suspicions concerning an off-limits military base in Parchin, outside Tehran, where warhead design experiments might have taken place.

Ban, whose presence at the summit had been criticised by the United States and Israel, also took Iran's leaders to task for recent comments calling Israel a "cancerous tumour" that should be cut out of the Middle East. He urged both Iran and Israel to cool the bellicose language.

"I strongly reject any threat by any (UN) member state to destroy another, or outrageous comments to deny historical facts such as the Holocaust," Ban said in his summit speech.

"Claiming another UN member state does not have the right to exist or describe it in racist terms is not only utterly wrong but undermines the very principles we have all pledged to uphold," he said.

"I urge all the parties to stop provocative and inflammatory threats. A war of words can quickly spiral into war of violence. Bluster can so easily become bloodshed. Now is the time for all the leaders to use their voices to lower, not raise, tensions," he said.

A total of 29 heads of state or government are attending the Tehran summit, including those of Afghanistan, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Palestinian Authority, Sudan, Qatar and Zimbabwe. North Korea was represented by its ceremonial head of state, parliamentary president Kim Yong-Nam, rather than the country's leader Kim Jong-Un.

President Obama answers Reddit users? questions

Find out what questions Redditors asked, what Obama said, and revel in a couple of memes

Earlier today, President Barack Obama stopped by online community Reddit to answer some of its users questions, with no topic off limit. While the president did not answer every question, the event was popular enough to cause Reddit to crumble under traffic pressure as users flooded Obama with over 12,000 questions and comments. Here are the full collection of the questions the president chose to answer, along with his unedited responses.

Q: We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom. Is Internet Freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform?

"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody - from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although there will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle - and it will be reflected in the platform."

Q: What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?

"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

Q:
I am recent law school graduate. Despite graduating from a top school, I find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future knowing that my ability to live a productive life -- to have a fulfilling career, to buy a house, to someday raise a family -- is hampered by my debt and the bleak economic outlook for young people. I know that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?

"I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right - your long term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're twenty six. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle class jobs - and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth - more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged - we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more."

Q: Are you considering increasing funds to the space program?

"Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level - so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Q: What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?

"The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead - so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

Q: Who's your favourite Basketball player?

"Jordan - I'm a Bulls guy."

Q: What is the first thing you'll do on November 7th, win or lose?

"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard - especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

Q: What's the recipe for the White House's beer?

"It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty."

Q: How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?

"It's hard - truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store - so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm - even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER - if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!"

Kindergarten readiness: Are shy kids at an academic disadvantage?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Parents of young children hope for a successful kindergarten experience that will set their youngsters on the right path of their educational journey. Some worry about their kids not adapting to the school environment, particularly when the children are talkative and overactive. Yet, a new study by the University of Miami (UM) shows that overly shy preschool children are at greater academic risk than their chatty and boisterous peers.

The study is one of the first to follow the social and academic progress of children throughout the preschool year. The report shows that children displaying shy and withdrawn behavior early in the preschool year started out with the lowest academic skills and showed the slowest gains in academic learning skills across the year. The findings are published online, in advance of print, by the Journal of School Psychology.

"Everybody wants their children to be ready for kindergarten, to know their ABCs and to be able to count, but they sometimes don't understand that having social-emotional readiness is equally important," says Rebecca J. Bulotsky-Shearer, assistant professor of psychology at UM College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) and principal investigator of the study.

Behavioral problems in the classroom arise when there is a gap between the child's developmental skills and the expectations of the school environment, according to the study. The findings suggest that children who are shy in the classroom have trouble engaging and learning.

"Preschool children who are very introverted tend to 'disappear within the classroom,'" says Elizabeth R. Bell, doctoral candidate in developmental psychology, at UM and co-author of the study. "It appears that while these children are not causing problems in the school, they are also not engaging in classroom activities and interactions, where almost all learning occurs during this age."

The results also raise the possibility that children who are loud and disruptive may be more likely to get the teacher's attention and benefit from specific educational strategies. "There are many classroom-based interventions for children that are disruptive and acting out in the classroom," says Bulotsky-Shearer. "I think the children who show an extreme amount of shyness and are withdrawn are most at risk of getting missed."

The researcher hopes the new findings encourage the development of appropriate classroom interventions tailored to the needs of different children, as well as appropriate training and professional development for teachers, to help them identify children who need help in specific areas. "This is especially important within early childhood programs such as Head Start, serving a diverse population of low-income children and families," says Bulotsky-Shearer.

The study analyzes information from 4, 417 prekindergarten children in the Head Start Program, ages 3 to 5, from a diverse population, living in a large urban district of the northeast. Six profile types were used to describe the preschoolers: 1.Well adjusted; 2. Adjusted with mild disengagement; 3.Moderately socially and academically disengaged; 4. Disruptive with peers; 5.Extremely socially and academically disruptive; 6.Extremely socially and academically disengaged.

The teachers assessed the emotional and behavioral characteristics, as well as the academic progress of each child, at three points in time during the preschool year. The findings show that older kids and girls tended to be better adjusted to the class, exhibited less behavioral problems, and had higher levels of social literacy, language and math skills.

The study is titled "Latent Profiles of Preschool Behavior within Learning, Peer, and Teacher Contexts: Identifying Subgroups of Children at Academic Risks across the Preschool Year." Ximena Dominguez, research social scientist, at SRI International is also a co-author of the study.
