Measuring The Inside Of A Tube With A Digital Vernier Caliper

A vernier caliper is a popular instrument used to measure the depth of a hole, inner diameter of a pipe or the outer diameter of a cylindrical or round object. This instrument is very vital in industries and laboratories to give accurate measurement on various objects. Digital calipers or electronic calipers are designed without a graduated measuring scale and are the most modern design of vernier calipers. The digital caliper consists of two lower jaws and two upper jaws. Understanding common guidelines on how to measure the inside of a tube with a digital vernier caliper will be helpful for those who are new to this tool.

1. Preparations prior to making a measurement

(a) Soak a clean cloth with cleaning oil and use it to clean and dry the measuring surface of the item to be measured.

(b) Repeat step ?a? to clean and dry the surface of the instrument cover.

(c) The next step involves loosening the locking key of the instrument.

(d) Clean and dry the lower jaw on the right hand side of the digital caliper as in step ?a? and ?b? above.

(e) Repeat step ?d? on the left hand side lower jaw of the instrument.

(f) Soak a clean cloth with cleaning oil and use it to clean and dry the upper jaw on the right hand side of the instrument.

(g) Repeat step ?f? on the left hand side upper jaw of the instrument.

(h) The next step is to close the instrument and turn ?on/of? button to ascertain whether the reading is zero. This is important to ensure standard calibration prior to taking any measurements. It is also vital to do thorough cleaning to ensure there is no gap between jaws which may cause in accuracies in measurements.

(i) The final step in preparation is checking whether all buttons and the LCD display are working well. This is done by simply moving the sliders.

2. Measuring the inside diameter of a tube

(a) The first step is to insert the upper jaws of the vernier calipers into the hollow surface of the tube.

(b) The second step is to open the upper jaws of the instrument to fit properly on the hollow surface of the tube.

(c) Read the measurement directly from the LCD display.

The main advantages of using digital verneir calipers include;

- The measurements are read directly from the LCD display.

- The measurements can easily be transferred to a computer or special printer using a USB cable.

- It is easy to choose between metric and inch measurement using the button.

- It is easy to take incremental measurements by setting 0 at any position.

In summary this instrument is very efficient when measuring the internal and external diameters of objects.
