Two dead as cargo plane crashes off South Korea (AFP)

SEOUL (AFP) ? Two people were killed when an Asiana Airlines cargo plane crashed Thursday off South Korea's southern island of Jeju after reporting mechanical problems, officials said.

Debris from the aircraft, which had taken off from Incheon at 3:05 am headed for Pudong in east China, was found by a coast guard patrol boat just over 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of the island, a Jeju coastguard spokesman said.

Four coastguard boats and a helicopter are searching the area, he told AFP.

The Boeing 744 plane carrying a pilot and co-pilot called Jeju airport at 4.11 am to request an emergency landing because of mechanical problems, an Asiana spokesman said.

The 744 is also known as the 747-400.

Asiana is the country's second and smaller flag carrier. It largely operates short-haul routes into Asia.

Succeeding with Article Marketing ? Essential Facts | The ...

Article marketing is one of the oldest and the most effective ways to drive traffic to your website or blog, and the best part is that each and every visitor that you generate via this method is laser targeted, giving you an edge over the competition ? It?s amazing at how easily things could be improved when examining Commission Domination.

The Best Amount: There is absolutely no way of knowing the magic number of articles that will give you great results when you are using article marketing. But you should also understand that along with quality, you should strive to produce more and more articles with time. You need to have as many articles as possible published online if you want your marketing efforts to generate the expected results. By regularly creating and submitting a high number of articles you have a stronger chance of making an impact. You have to ensure that you keep the quality of your articles up while working on so many because your focus should be on offering value. If you want to observe how promotions using this kind of marketing can rank then take a look at Google Cash Monster.

Focus on the Title: If you want to run a successful article marketing campaign, you should know the value of writing good titles with great titles. The success of a campaign relies heavily on your headlines because if people aren?t interested in reading what you have written, then you might as well give up on everything else. It doesn?t matter what niche you are in, because half the battle is one if people are interested enough to click through and read your articles. You need to offer your readers strong motivation to read your articles and that won?t happen if you have weak titles. The winning formula to create great titles is to include the right keyword, make your readers curious and be direct.

Speak to Your Audience: Have you ever encountered an article that seems really cold when you read it? They have no personality whatsoever, they don?t connect to the reader at all and they are completely dry. Your writing needs to reflect the way you talk, so you need to approach a more conversational tone if you want to see great results from article marketing. You want people to feel connected to you which will allow you to build a relationship with them and the best way to do that is to make them feel as if you are speaking directly to them through your articles. You don?t want your readers feeling as if you have some ulterior motive but they do need to feel that you care about all of them. I?ve discovered that tips mentioned in the following paragraphs are good for commission vigilante.

Every article marketer knows that in order to achieve long term success, it?s really important that you give your readers value, and at the same time keep an eye on things are progressing.

Top 5 Reasons That A Person Would Need a Criminal Defense Lawyer ...

A lawyer who is assigned to construct a defense for someone accused of a crime is known as a criminal defense attorney. In law, there are 3 kinds of criminal offenses; felonies (serious offenses such as murder and manslaughter), misdemeanors (mildly serious offenses), and infractions (small offenses such as traffic violations). If you find yourself in a situation like this, the first thing you need to do is get in touch with a criminal defense attorney. Following are five scenarios which necessitate the hiring of a criminal defense lawyer.

The first of the top 5 reasons why someone might require the services of a criminal defense lawyer is to ensure a fair trial. As you?re most likely already aware, all accused individuals are innocent until proven guilty. This applies to all people, regardless of the severity of the crime they have been charged with. Defense lawyers know all the ins and outs of the legal system and can ensure that both you and your rights are protected throughout your trial.

The second of the top 5 reasons why someone might need a criminal defense lawyer deals with negotiating plea bargains. A plea bargain is possible in the event that your lawyer is confident that you won?t be getting a verdict of not guilty. The negotiation of a plea bargain will be done by your attorney and will help in a reduction of the sentence imposed and/ or any fines involved in the case, given that your lawyer thinks your prospects are not favorable.

Third on the list of the top 5 reasons why someone might need a criminal defense lawyer is simply for the provision of legal advice. The best time to hire a lawyer is before you have been charged with anything. If you are being investigated by police, it is important that you know your rights. Never speak with the police before speaking with your attorney. They can help you through the investigation process, ensuring that you don?t say anything incriminating to the police that can impair your chances of the verdict you?re after.

The fourth reason someone might need a criminal defense attorney is that as the accused, you need the advice of someone with extensive legal experience. The legal system is complicated and too difficult for the average person to comprehend in full. Criminal defense attorneys are experts in the field of law and will be able to advise you throughout your defense. They will guide you through procedures, attend hearings with you, and work with you throughout the trial.

This brings us to the final of the top 5 reasons why someone might need a criminal defense lawyer ? to get the best possible verdict! Without a lawyer, you are likely to be found guilty of your crime. With a knowledgeable lawyer, however, you are going to get the best possible verdict (hopefully of not guilty!).

Well, we?ve examined the five good reasons someone would need to hire a criminal defense attorney! If you have been accused of committing a criminal offense, hire a defense lawyer and grasp a better understanding of your rights!

The Many Benefits Of Websites For Agriculture Purposes

???

Rural communities are beginning to embrace technology and farmers are getting on board with leading marketing and advertising strategies. These strategies include creating websites for agriculture businesses, blogs, fairs and festivals, and livestock sales. Goat farmers, hog farmers, cattle farmers, and horse breeders all benefit from building websites to display their items on. Crop farmers can list helpful soil and weather information and blog about harvesting and what the stock prices are. This allows the agriculture community as a whole to benefit and grow and remain prosperous even when economic times are stringent.

Farmers who sell livestock and crop can benefit significantly from building a website but they are not the only people involved in agriculture who can put a website to good use. Seed sellers and distributors have the opportunity to sell their crop seeds to a broader base of customers and can even sell seeds across the country and internationally at desired prices by marketing seeds on their business website.

Machinery companies which sell tractors, combines, augers, and barn kits also can reach out to earn a broader customer base by building a website to market their services on. This will also help the consumer who purchases these machinery items to be able to make better price comparisons between companies. Listing photos and videos of products as well as warranties that might be available will help to provide potential customers with information needed for them to make a purchasing decision.

Using websites to sell these items online allows you to keep your overhead costs down as your marketing costs will lower. It can be extremely costly to advertise in pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, and radio. These advertisements also have to be renewed constantly. Advertising on your own business agriculture website will be free and permanent marketing which you can update and upgrade as needed.

For the simple and low cost of purchasing a website from a web hosting company, you will have access to create blogs, upload photos and videos, and to ask for customer reviews of the products you sell online. Customer reviews of your products or services are always wise things to include on a business website as it allows other consumers to see if people who have purchased from you resulted in being happy customers.

Other agriculture websites can be built to display 4-H and FFA news and items and to promote agriculture amongst up and coming generations. As youth get more involved and learn more about the pursuit of agriculture and what it takes to be successful in the agriculture industry, the leaders of these youth will be helping to ensure a better future for everyone as well as preparing children to become leaders.

Websites can be built for children interested in agriculture and can announce agriculture fairs, tours, and promotions. Websites for agriculture can be used for many different reasons and can help to promote and better the agriculture industry as a whole. It is also a way for people within the industry to stay connected with one another and to share tips, suggestions, and ideas.

What happens when you have second thoughts about a prompting ...

Sorry, this is going to be really long.

Some of you may remember that a few months ago I was living in Flagstaff while going to school (my home, including DH and my older two kids, is in the Phoenix area). One Sunday in Sacrament Meeting I suddenly had a VERY strong prompting that I was to change my major to Special Education and work with special needs children. So I quit school (DD#3 and I were miserably homesick at the time and job prospects in the major I was working on were bleak; I was also nearly failing two classes) and moved home, intending to change my major. I knew I probably wouldn't be returning to school this fall as I would have to pay NAU back for some of the financial aid I received before I could get more (about $2000).

So now I work at a private school, in their on-site daycare which I love. But over the past few months as I've talked to the teachers there as well as other teachers I know (both private and public), I'm really having serious doubts that I want to work in education. I'm remembering now why I changed majors from Education to Wildlife Biology in the past. And now I'm doubting that prompting. Was it telling me to change majors, or just telling me that if I wanted to work with special needs children that I would have to change majors? I felt so good about it at the time, really excited, but now I'm really sorry that I dropped out and changed majors.

I'm wishing I'd at least stuck it out through the rest of the semester and then maybe taken some time off to decide (though I still don't know if I could have, as I was literally crying every day because I missed home and family so much and DD#3 was often crying herself to sleep; I'm sure the bipolar disorder and depression I have had an impact on that).

DH and I have felt for awhile that we would either give birth to or adopt a child with special needs. But now we're not even sure we want to add more children to our family. We're both pushing 40 and two of our kids are grown. The third child will be grown in just 6 years. We're not sure we want to start over. In addition, we're both starting to have some health issues and can't even afford to take care of ourselves. By the time our financial situation improves to where we can afford another child (especially a child with special needs), we may genuinely be too old!

So now I'm thinking that I misinterpreted the prompting or that maybe it even just came from my own emotions. I was so sure at the time, but now I feel almost certain that this is NOT the path I want to take. But if it truly was a prompting from God, do I need to follow this path even if I don't want to? I'm just so confused. I know I have some time to think about it, as I can't return to school for at least the next year anyway (until that $2000 is paid off).

I just don't know what to think of this. I do love children, but I'm not at all enthused about what teachers have to deal with these days from the bureaucracy, and working in the daycare has made me question whether I really have the energy and patience for working with children or having anymore. On the other hand, I love working with animals and love being outdoors, even in bad weather. I do volunteer work at animal care facilities and LOVE it. It would seem like a no-brainer to stick with the field I love more, even if jobs in that are aren't great (and who knows what they would be like when I graduate in 2 or more years), but I still remember how I felt when I had that prompting. I just don't know what to do.

What do you guys think?

LONDON (AFP) ? Europe's main stock markets firmed at the start of trading on Friday in the wake of a eurozone debt deal, with London's benchmark FTSE 100 index up 0.49 percent to 5,928.64 points.

Frankfurt's DAX 30 grew 0.25 percent to 7,308.48 points and in Paris the CAC 40 gained 0.95 percent to 3,855.43.

Share prices had already closed sharply higher on Thursday as news of the eurozone debt deal offered the hope of finally taming a crisis which has roiled markets for months.

Walter Reed Closing: U.S. Army's Flagship Hospital Shutting Doors After More Than A Century

WASHINGTON ? Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Army's flagship hospital where privates to presidents have gone for care, is closing its doors after more than a century.

Hundreds of thousands of the nation's war wounded from World War I to today have received treatment at Walter Reed, including 18,000 troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Dwight Eisenhower died there. So did Gens. John J. Pershing and Douglas MacArthur.

It's where countless celebrities, from Bob Hope to quarterback Tom Brady, have stopped to show their respect to the wounded. Through the use of medical diplomacy, the center also has tended to foreign leaders.

The storied hospital, which opened in 1909, was scarred by a 2007 scandal about substandard living conditions on its grounds for wounded troops in outpatient care and the red tape they faced. It led to improved care for the wounded, at Walter Reed and throughout the military. By then, however, plans were moving forward to close Walter Reed's campus.

Two years earlier, a government commission, noting that Walter Reed was showing its age, voted to close the facility and consolidate its operations with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and a hospital at Fort Belvoir, Va., to save money.

Former and current patients and staff members will say goodbye at a ceremony Wednesday on the parade grounds in front of the main concrete and glass hospital complex. Most of the moving will occur in August. On Sept. 15, the Army hands over the campus to the new tenants: the State Department and the District of Columbia. The buildings on campus deemed national historic landmarks will be preserved; others probably will be torn down. The city is expected to develop its section for retail and other uses.

"For many of the staff members, even though they know that this is the future of the military health system, in a way, it's still like losing your favorite uncle, and so there is a certain amount of mourning that is going on and it is an emotional time," said Col. Norvell Coots, commander of the Walter Reed Health Care System.

The new facility will be called the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. It will consolidate many of Walter Reed's current offerings with the Navy hospital.

"Frankly, I will say it's with a heavy heart that Walter Reed closes. I don't know. I know that there was a process for that decision, but we've lost a great, important part of history," said Susan Eisenhower, granddaughter of the former president.

She recalled bringing to the hospital a birthday cake she had baked for her grandfather, who spent the last several months before his death in 1969 in a special suite where politicians and foreign leaders visited him.

There are countless pieces of history throughout the campus.

At the rose garden, some nurses from the Vietnam War era were said to have married their patients. The memorial chapel is where President Harry S. Truman went for his first church service after taking office, following a visit with Pershing, who lived in a suite at Walter Reed for several years, said John Pierce, historian for the Walter Reed Society.

A marker identifies the spot on the hospital grounds where, long before the hospital was built, Confederate sharpshooters fired near President Abraham Lincoln, leading an officer to call Lincoln a "damned fool" and order him to the ground, according a brochure produced by Walter Reed about its history.

President Calvin Coolidge's teenage son died in the hospital from an infected blister he received while playing tennis at the White House, Pierce said. A black and white photo from 1960 shows then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson, a vice presidential candidate at the time, visiting the bedside of Vice President Richard Nixon, who was being treated for a staph infection.

Presidents now are sent to Bethesda for treatment because it's considered more secure, said Sanders Marble, senior historian with the Office of Medical History at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The hospital was named to honor Maj. Walter Reed, an Army physician who treated troops and American Indians on the frontier. Among his medical achievements was life-saving research that proved that yellow fever was spread by mosquito. He died in 1902 at age 51 of complications related to appendicitis with a friend and colleague, Lt. Col. William C. Borden, treating him.

"I'm sure (Borden) felt very guilty about that, and over the course of the next several years, he campaigned to get money for a new hospital and of course, wanted to name it for his good friend Walter Reed," Pierce said.

The original redbrick hospital had about 80 beds, but inpatient capacity grew by the thousands during the wars of the last century. Today, it treats about 775,000 outpatients annually, and has an inpatient load of about 150. It wasn't just service members and military retirees treated at the hospital over the decades, but their families, too. Countless babies were born at the hospital into the 1990s.

Rehabilitation for the wounded, including care for amputees, has been an important part of the mission since it opened. The wounded commonly spend a year or longer at the hospital now, although they are more quickly moved to outpatient care.

Photos from World War I show troops at Walter Reed learning skills such as typing and knitting. During World War II, brochures distributed to the war amputees featured pictures of amputees smoking and shaving. The message was, "Your life isn't over, don't get down," Marble said.

Laura Lehigh's late husband, Michael Schmidt, was a lieutenant when he proposed to her during his stay at Walter Reed. He was recovering from a gunshot wound he received in Vietnam in 1968.

In letters to her, he described stinky bedpans, a "new inmate" moving into his ward, a "celebrity of the week" visit from "Tricky Dick Nixon," practical jokes played on student nurses, a champagne party for a triple amputee's 26th birthday, and how the orderlies turned patients' beds near a window around so they could watch Johnson enter the hospital to visit Eisenhower.

"Mike always had a wonderful sense of humor, but I think they kind of all aspired to have a sense of humor, those guys who had lost their limbs who didn't know what their lives were going to be like getting out. I think they had a camaraderie and a sense of humor and an optimism about themselves, if not about life in general," said Lehigh, 63, in a telephone interview from Kalamazoo, Mich.

Despite all the warm feelings, a Washington Post investigation in 2007 uncovered shoddy living conditions in an outpatient ward known as Building 18. Troops were living among black mold and mouse droppings while trying to fend for themselves as they battled a complex bureaucracy of paperwork related to the disability evaluation system.

The report drew scrutiny of all aspects of care offered to the nation's wounded. The scandal embarrassed the Army and the Bush administration, and led to the firings of some military leaders.

Afterward, some in Congress pushed for the Pentagon to change course and keep Walter Reed open, but an independent group reviewed the idea and recommended moving forward with Walter Reed's closure plans.

It concluded that the Defense Department was or should have been aware of the widespread problems but neglected them because they knew Walter Reed was scheduled to be closed. Then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates agreed, and said there was little wisdom in pouring money into Walter Reed to keep it open indefinitely.

"Far better to make an investment in brand-new, 21st-century facilities," Gates told reporters.

Pierce said the quality of medical care at Walter Reed didn't suffer, even leading up to the scandal.

"It was administrative issues and housing issues, and the housing issues were significant. I don't think anyone would want to say they weren't and it shouldn't have happened, but it was not a quality of care situation," Pierce said.

In addition to improved living conditions, one of the other upgrades after the scandal was the opening of an advanced rehabilitation center for troops with amputations. On a recent day, several amputees, including some who had lost three limbs, were exercising in the room, one even on a skateboard.

Marine Sgt. Rob Jones, 25, is a double amputee from the Afghanistan war who spends much of his days rowing. His goal is to become an FBI agent or make the U.S. Adaptive Rowing Team.

One of more than 440 troops from the recent wars getting outpatient care, he sat on a bench outside the center reading a book. His prosthetics were visible below his shorts.

"I'll probably just remember the people I was working with, the staff here, how much they helped me get back on my feet." Jones said.

Oil rises above $98 after US crude supply drop (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices rose to above $98 a barrel Wednesday in Asia after a report showed U.S. crude supplies dropped more than expected, a sign that demand may be improving.

Benchmark oil for August delivery was up 99 cents to $98.49 a barrel at late afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Crude rose $1.57 to settle at $97.50 on Tuesday.

In London, the September contract for Brent crude rose $1.08 to $118.14 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories fell 5.2 million barrels last week, while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted a drop of 1.3 million barrels.

Inventories of gasoline rose 2.0 million barrels last week, while distillates increased 1.1 million barrels, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.

Evidence that the U.S. housing market may be recovering also helped boost investor optimism and oil prices. The Commerce Department on Tuesday said construction of new homes grew by 14.6 percent last month.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 1.6 percent Tuesday and most Asian stock markets gained Wednesday.

"The oil price support was heavily influenced by some housing starts and permit figures that easily exceeded expectations," energy analyst Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. "Swings in the euro and the U.S. stock market have become an important influence behind the oil price movements seen thus far this month."

In other Nymex trading in September contracts, heating oil added 2.0 cents to $3.13 a gallon, while gasoline gained 2.1 cents at $3.09 a gallon. Natural gas futures for August delivery advanced 2.2 cents at $4.56 per 1,000 cubic feet.

tendinitis, ganglion cysts, shoulder pain....now what?

For me long term health is more important than any sport. Sometimes adults have to make grown up choices because kids are not mature enough to know the consequences of their choices.

I would have the sports med doc evaluate her and talk to her coaches, if they are truly concerned about her ability to stay healthy in gymnastics, aside from the usual breaks and bruise (!), then perhaps gym is not the sport for her. NOt every body is able to take a sport like gymnastics, it is very hard and even the strongest girls struggle with injuries.

My DD had to quit gym, and then she had to quit T&T and then she had to stop doing any physical activity. She was sad, but she knew that her body couldn't take the strain of gym. In three months she will eb able to do pretty much anything but gym, tramp, bungee jumping and skydiving. So it's all good.

Bernanke "prepared to respond" if economy worsens (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The U.S. Federal Reserve is ready to ease monetary policy further if economic growth and inflation slow much more, chairman Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday, giving a boost to the bruised stock market.

While holding to a view that recent economic softness would eventually pass, he appeared less confident in that projection and more willing to entertain the possibility of another round of stimulus.

"The possibility remains that the recent economic weakness may prove more persistent than expected and that deflationary risks might reemerge, implying a need for additional policy support," Bernanke told the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee.

Bernanke specifically noted the Fed's forecasts in June, already revised down significantly from April, had not incorporated recent data, particularly last Friday's dismal employment report. It showed job growth essentially ground to a halt in May and June while the jobless rate rose to 9.2 percent.

Hopes for further monetary support sent U.S. stocks, which have taken a drubbing over the last week on worries about Europe's debt troubles and a soft U.S. economy, 1 percent higher, while Treasury bond prices and the dollar tumbled.

"The market wasn't thinking there would be any mention of QE3 whatsoever and here we're finding out QE3 is not being ruled out. It's a tantalizing headline," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

Asked whether the Fed would be willing to launch another bond purchase program if the economy slumps, Bernanke said: "We have to keep all the options on the table. We don't know where the economy is going to go."

Embarking on a path of further stimulus would not be simple. The second, $600 billion bond buying program, which ended in June, raised eyebrows both at home and abroad when it was first announced back in November.

Republicans and some economists accused the Fed of laying the groundwork for future inflation, while leaders in emerging economies accused the Fed of a backdoor dollar devaluation.

Pressed on the budget, Bernanke reiterated his warning that a failure to raise the U.S. debt ceiling would deal a severe blow to the global economic recovery.

"Cutting programs or raising taxes in ways that will reduce aggregate demand ... is going to slow the economy," he said.

Minutes from the Fed's June meeting, released on Tuesday, showed some policymakers believe the Fed should stand ready to provide more support to the economy if the recovery flags, rekindling the threat of a debilitating downward spiral in prices and wages.

Others on the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee, however, felt inflation risks might force the central bank to withdraw stimulus sooner than is currently anticipated.

DOOR OPEN TO QE3

Still, given the change in tune, some investors were betting the more dovish members of the committee would win the day in pushing for a third round of quantitative easing if the economy continues to deteriorate.

"My initial reaction was 'QE3 here we come'," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. "We suspected the Fed would come up with some sort of QE3 in light of the disturbance surrounding the sovereign debt markets."

Bernanke did not go into great detail regarding Europe, but the Fed chief's outlook on U.S. growth prospects was understandably cautious.

After recovering from the steepest recession in generations beginning in the summer of 2009, the U.S. economy has lost momentum in recent months. Gross domestic product expanded just 1.9 percent in the first three months of the year, and the second quarter does not look to have been much better.

Bernanke held to the view that recent weakness was due in part to temporary factors like energy costs and the effects on global industry from Japan's earthquake and tsunami.

But he acknowledged the labor market remains weaker than the Fed would like.

"The most recent data attest to the continuing weakness of the labor market," Bernanke said.

Bernanke defended the second round of bond buys against critics who said it had been ineffective.

He said the Fed estimates round two of quantitative easing, or QE2, lowered long-term interest rates by between 0.1 and 0.3 percentage point, which Bernanke said would be roughly equivalent to a 0.40 to 1.20 percentage point decline in the federal funds rate, which is currently set in a range between zero and 0.25 percent.

Regarding inflation, Bernanke reiterated the recent rise in prices was mostly linked to transitory factors such as higher energy and commodity prices, and should trend back down.

Apple actually not looking for additional iPad manufacturers, still BFFs with Foxconn?

Earlier this week, DigiTimes alleged that Apple was considering an additional manufacturer to produce the supposedly looming -- but really more mythical -- next generation iPad. Fast forward to now, and the Taiwanese publication reports that Cupertino has had a sudden change of heart. Foxconn -- who is currently the sole producer of the slate -- has reportedly convinced Apple to keep its manufacturing exclusive until the end of this calendar year. All isn't lost for Foxconn's competition though: the rumormonger suggests Pegatron still has a shot at a ten million production run for the next iPhone, and whatever iPad's 2012 will bring. Unmentioned in the report, however, is whether enough salt exists in the world to cover the next round of claims, later this week.

VIDEO: Big Brother's Jeff Rages Against Dumbledore's Homosexuality (omg!)

Not even those sequestered in the Big Brother house are immune to Harry Potter fever, what with it being Harry Potter Week and all thanks to the Friday release of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2. As seen on the show's live feed, veteran Jeff and newcomer Kalia recently got into it over J.K. Rowling's years-old revelation that Dumbledore was gay.

Incredulous at the idea, Jeff reasons (or attempts to), "He's in a school with little kids, you can't make that guy gay ... It isn't right to have it in a little kids' book, and have the headmaster locked away in this magical land, be gay. That isn't the right kind of writing to do." When Kalia pushes back, Jeff says that she's being PC and saying "the right answer for f---ing TV."

Our take on Big Brother's dynamic duos

Jeff never gets around to explaining his rationale. I have two theories for why: 1) Ignorance and inarticulateness make great bedfellows, and 2) His implication that all gay people are pedophiles and cannot be trusted around children is too heinous for even a strident homophobe to verbalize ? at least on TV. You may recall that during Season 11, Jeff peppered his speech with anti-gay sentiment. At least he didn't use any slurs this time!

He did, however, use NSFW language -- so beware when watching this clip:

Ex-PM Brown alleges Murdoch paper used criminals (AP)

LONDON ? Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Tuesday accused Rupert Murdoch's newspapers of employing criminals to obtain confidential information about his family, his private financial affairs and the lives of ordinary people who were at "rock bottom."

Brown's furious denunciation of the politically powerful News International papers came a day after questions were raised about how The Sun newspaper obtained confidential information in 2006 that Brown's infant son Fraser had cystic fibrosis.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp., Brown said he and his wife Sarah were in tears after being informed by Rebekah Brooks, then the editor of The Sun and now the chief executive of News International, that the paper knew about his son's illness.

Brown also accused The Sunday Times of employing criminals to hack into his bank and tax records.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Brown had highlighted what "looks like yet another example of an appalling invasion of privacy and the hacking of personal data," and said he was determined that the current investigations would get to the bottom of it.

Outrage over the long-simmering allegations of wrongdoing at the Murdoch-owned News of the World exploded last week when it was claimed that employees of the newspaper hacked the phone of Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old murder victim, as police searched for her in 2002. The employees allegedly deleted some voicemail messages, giving her parents false hope that the girl was still alive and using the phone.

With breathtaking speed, the scandal has disrupted the media mogul's plans to take over highly profitable satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting and slashed billions off the value of his global conglomerate, News Corp.

"This was a culture in both The Sunday Times and in other newspapers in News International where they really exploited people ? I'm not talking so much about me here now, I'm talking about people who were at rock bottom ? and rock bottom was the rock upon which The Sunday Times founded their reputation, and other newspapers in News International founded their reputation, for purely commercial gain and in some cases to abuse political power," Brown said.

"What about the person, like the family of Milly Dowler, who are in the most desperate of circumstances, the most difficult occasions in their lives, in huge grief and then they find that they are totally defenseless in this moment of greatest grief from people who are employing these ruthless tactics with links to known criminals?"

Brown did not identify anyone he believed to be a criminal employed by News International.

In a brief statement responding to Brown, News International said: "So that we can investigate these matters further, we ask that all information concerning these allegations is provided to us."

Brown said he knew of no legitimate means by which The Sun found out about his son's illness.

"They will have to explain themselves," he said. "I can't think of any way that the medical condition of a child can be put into the public arena legitimately unless the doctor makes a statement or the family makes a statement."

A News International official, speaking on condition of anonymity, asserted that the information was obtained legitimately.

Later Tuesday, London police officers faced questions from a legislative committee about why they didn't pursue a phone hacking investigation at the tabloid News of the World two years ago.

Before the hearing, opposition Labour Party legislators called for the resignation of John Yates, assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, who decided in 2009 that there was nothing more to investigate at the paper. Yates says he relied on advice from colleagues.

Yates said News of the World and News International had not cooperated with investigators.

"In hindsight, had I known what I should have known, it was a poor decision," he said.

Ian Blair, the head of the Metropolitan Police from 2005 to 2008, told legislators that phone hacking by newspapers "was never a major issue in my time."

"It was a tiny fragmentary event in the events that were taking place across London at the time," Blair said, as police were focused on the fight against terrorism.

In 2007, a reporter and a private detective working for News of the World were sent to prison for hacking the voicemail messages of royal family employees.

The scandal has also raised fresh questions about Cameron's judgment because he hired former News of the World editor Andy Coulson as his communications chief.

Coulson, who had resigned from the newspaper in 2007 because of the hacking convictions, was arrested by police last week as part of the new investigation.
