Wine and Food Travel: Cheers! To the official "Wine of the Olympics"

?

In ?the spirit of the 2012 London Olympic Games?which begins in only a few hours, I thought it was only appropriate to move ?off schedule? and share thoughts on a very interesting article related to ?Olympic wines.? ?This year will be the first since 1896 that the Olympic Games have officially named any wines or spirits as ?Official Wines of the Olympic Games.? Wine seems to be a controversial choice of beverage for olympic athletes, but you may also say that about other large sponsorships such as Coco-Cola or McDonald?s. ?All of that said, we all know that as the excitement builds, so does our appetites for watching and celebrating our patriotism, our athletes and the sense of hope as we watch history being made. ?Since we are celebrating, what better way than with ?official spirits? ? Cheers to that, I say!

In my limited research (keep in mind that I have only a few hours before I myself will be planted in front of a 60? screen with a glass in hand), I discovered that some of the ?Official Wines of the Games? are not just promoted because of their country of origin. ?They may actually have something to bragg about. ?An article in ?The Telegraph? showcases of few of Britain?s whites that were found to be quite popular? in places outside of Britain. ?That is the key afterall because anyone can ?toot their own horn? but if others join the orchestra, then you know you?ve got something.

All of this said, if you are thinking of opening a bottle? or two in the spirit of the Olympic games, you may want to honor our hosts and support the ?official Olympic wines?, toast our athletes and enjoy!

Abrahamson: Games kick off with style

A scene from the "Pandemonium" act of the London Olympics Opening Ceremony, produced by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle.

LONDON -- Inside the stadium, everyone sang along to "Hey, Jude" with Sir Paul McCartney. Over the city, fireworks boomed out over the Tower Bridge. Around the world, two of every three people watched on television Friday night as the XXX Olympiad got underway, its history to be written over the next 16 days.

The rain mostly held off -- was that an omen portending good for these Games? -- in what has been one of the rainiest summers in British history, London playing host to the Olympics for the third time. It staged the Games in 1908 and again in 1948.

Seven young British torchbearers lit the cauldron -- a tiny flame within a copper petal on the ground that triggered the ignition of more than 200 petals and then converged to form a single "flame of unity." The cauldron is due to be moved to a different place into the stadium during the Games, then disassembled at the close of the Olympics -- meant to evoke a flower that blooms only for a while.

The party-vibe contrast with China, and 2008 -- which opened with the awe-inspiring sound of 2,008 drums, unmistakably signaling the portent of history -- could not have been more dramatic.

As the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had said in London on Friday, "This is a time of some economic difficulty for the U.K. but look at what we are capable of achieving as a nation, even at a difficult economic time. This is not a a London Games, this is not an England Games, this is a United Kingdom Games."

This is also widely expected to be the Games of U.S. swim stars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte; of Jamaican track and field standouts Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake; of the U.S. women's gymnastics team and Japan's Kohei Uchimura, perhaps the best male gymnast of all time.

The ceremony Friday, which ran over into early Saturday morning, underscored the important role that women, and female athletes in particular, seem destined to play at these Games.

For the first time, women from all 204 national Olympic committees will be competing in the Summer Olympics.

In his remarks in the stadium, the president of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, said, ?This is a major boost for gender equality.?

Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar had been the final holdouts; the flag-bearer from Qatar, for instance, Bahya Mansour Al Hamad, a shooter, is female.

The 529-member American delegation featured more women, 268, than men, 261 -- a consequence of 40 years of Title IX, the landmark federal law that prohibits discrimination in school and sports.

One of those 268 women, Mariel Zagunis, the gold medal-winning fencer, led the American team into Olympic Stadium -- cheered on by, in part, First Lady Michelle Obama.

In her Twitter feed, one of the female wrestlers on the U.S. team, Kelsey Campbell, said the First Lady offered some advice: "Have fun, try to breathe a little, and win!!!"

Brenda Villa, the U.S. women's water polo star playing in her fourth Olympics, said about the opening ceremony, "You walk in together behind our awesome American flag ? and then you just get this rush of adrenaline and you're, like, 'OK. We're here. It's on. Let's go.' "

Roughly 45 percent of the 10,500 athletes taking part in the London Games will be female. All 26 sports on the Olympic program will feature female competitors. Boxing, at last, will feature female competitors in three weight classes.

Finally, this, after an opening ceremony that saw or heard sheep and chickens; a time trip through the Industrial Age and the Digital Age; a military-jet flyover; the ringing of a big bell; Queen Elizabeth and James Bond; Mary Poppins and Lord Voldemort; Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols, The Clash; and of course, Sir Paul.

All that ? the show ran long, and still they let McCartney finish, unlike two weeks ago in Hyde Park, when he and Bruce Springsteen had the sound turned off.

With more than 60,000 people singing that sad song, and making it better.

Nick Diaz Update: Will Return, Wants Anderson Silva

Like a passing case of the munchies, UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz's plans to retire seem to have faded, and taking the place of that retirement is a burning desire to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.? All this is according to his longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, who posted a lengthy statement on the matter over at GracieFighter.

It was only just February when Diaz purportedly turned his back on the sport, a move prompted by his controversial unanimous decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.??The defeat?came?after a five-round scrap for the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship title, and the bout?saw Condit playing "hit and run" while the Stockton native followed him around and?hurled insults.? Soon after,?it was revealed that?Diaz had tested positive for?marijuana metabolites in a post-fight urinalysis, and the subsequent year-long suspension levied upon him appeared to be the icing on the retirement cake.

Said Gracie:

For the last couple months I've watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more.? He's training harder now than he has for many of his fights.? It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA.? It is who he is.

This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back in the cage.? Nick Diaz will return.

With interim champ Condit destined to face UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November, who is there for Diaz - an elite,?top-level fighter -?to face that's worthwhile?

As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights "that matter".? Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere.? He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.

Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catchweight.? Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.

And there you have it.? Unfortunately, unless Diaz (or, more aptly, his attorneys) can figure out a way around his suspension, ain't nothin' going down 'till February, 2013.? Remember kids, dope is for dopes.? Don't be a dope!

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? Come at me, bro.

Tyrannosaurs In Mexico

The human history of Mexico is interesting, but after diligent study it can all seem desperately depressing. Between the ruthless Spanish conquest, the bloody civil wars, and the cutthroat politics, Mexico is home to far too much human drama. So let's jump back in time--way back--to when the land was ruled by creatures whose notion of politics was less 'diplomatic maneuvering' and more 'skull full of 8-inch teeth'.

Yes, dinosaurs. They fascinate all of us at some point, regardless of age, gender, or geographic location. Known only from a handful of fossilized remains, dinosaurs are a stark reminder of the incredible age of the Earth, and the immense variety of life that lived and died long before humans came around. They are tantalizing; every new discovery raises more questions than it answers. And no dinosaur is more dramatic or terrifying than the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

This theropod dinosaur lived in western North America during the late Cretaceous period, between 67 and 65 million years ago. They were among the last dinosaurs to exist before the massive K-T extinction event that killed most life on Earth. Back in the Cretaceous, North America was barely recognizable, split in two by a massive inland sea that covered most of the American Midwest. The T-rex had an impressive range, from Alberta all the way down to the northern Mexican states, and it's no wonder; it was one of the largest land-based carnivores in the world. Fossilized specimens measure 40 feet in length, and weight estimates range from five to seven tons.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex is so famous that it almost defies the need for description: it ran on two huge and powerful hind legs, and had a gigantic skull filled with sharp teeth and huge, forward-facing eyes. The small front arms bore powerful claws, and its heavy body was balanced by an impressively bulky tail. The T-Rex was either an apex predator--hunting other carnivorous animals--or a scavenger; debate has raged over the years. But it is known that those teeth were capable of crushing bones, and the forward-facing eyes are still found on predators to this day.

Scientists know more about the Tyrannosaurus Rex than they do most other dinosaurs, in part because they've found several complete fossilized skeletons. This is an incredibly rare event; most dinosaur fossils are small collections of bones. But T-Rex remains have been relatively abundant; some have even contained preserved soft tissue and proteins. Researchers have been able to determine sexual dimorphism, possible cannibalistic tendencies, and even evidence that T-Rexes suffered from parasitic infections. With their intimidating skulls and massive size, it's no wonder that Tyrannosaurus Rex is the most recognizable dinosaur on the planet. If you thought that dinosaurs couldn't possibly have lived in your own backyard, think again; from the wine fields of Sonora to the deserts of Texas, your homestead was once the hunting ground of the Cretaceous Era's most famous predator.

The Search for the Elusive Chicken Tender | Special Education ...

I?m sure we are not the only parents who struggle to find the foods your child eats while on vacation.? As many of you, we will do what it takes to find something for our son to eat at a restaurant or hotel.? We usually stay at hotel with a timeshare so that we have a kitchen for breakfast and lunch.?

The timeshare properties usually have the nicer pool area; however, the one we stayed at in Arizona it was the?reverse.??We went to Arizona to have some R&R and visit my in-laws.? From California, it?s only a 6 hour drive.? The hotel had a 110 foot waterslide with a 900 foot lazy river.? The hotel was about a mile away and we needed to take a shuttle to get there so going back to the room for lunch was not possible.? The first day of our vacation I made him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to take to the hotel so that we could use their pool.? The pool area was great; he stayed in the water for hours!? When it came time for lunch, we ordered from the pool bar restaurant and my son pulled out his sandwich.? An hour later, the pool manager came over to us and in a very nice way mentioned for future reference, the hotel doesn?t allow guests to bring food into the pool area.? Yes, I could have brought up the Americans with Disabilities Act and I?m sure he would have allowed us to continue to bring in sandwiches for my son but he was so nice I let it go.

The next day, we went back to the hotel pool; remember I said Arizona; the temperature was now in the triple digits.? So when lunch time came, it was too hot to eat poolside.? My husband went to the hotel restaurant to make sure they had chicken tenders and french fries.? What they had was teriyaki glazed chicken tenders with jasmine rice and vegetables.? He asked if he could just get plain chicken tenders and french fries and the hostess said that it was not on their menu, so we could not.

He found that odd, so he went to the hotel concierge and asked if any of the restaurants in the hotel serve regular chicken tenders and french fries.? She replied of course, room service has them and they control all the food supply in the hotel. His next response was, then why can?t I order chicken tenders in the restaurant.? She said that didn?t make any sense, so she called the chef in the restaurant and he?said no problem.? The chef actually said in the coolest Australian accent, ?I can do that all day long, mate.?

We ended up going to the hotel restaurant a couple of more times because it was in the triple digits and my son couldn?t get enough of the lazy river; so we ate lunch in the hotel as well.? Since, we had a new waiter each time we visited we had to have a long conversation everyday explaining what my son wanted.? Chefs are funny because many of them can?t help themselves to try and make even the most basic kids meal look fancy.? Today?s chicken tenders came out with the french fries covered in chopped parsley flakes to make it look pretty.? Unfortunately we had to ask them to take it back.

The third and last time we went to the hotel restaurant for lunch I started to explain again to the new waiter and he stopped me half way through and said, ?oh you want it room service style, no worries.?? By the way, they came our perfectly so next time I just need to remember the magic words, ?room service style? and it will come out just the way he likes it, plain with no garnish!!

However the search didn?t stop there.? One night my in-laws stayed with my son so we could go to dinner and a movie.? There was a nice complex across from where we stayed that included some unique restaurants.? After we finished dinner, there was still time before the movie began, so we decided to once again search for the elusive chicken tender.? Instead of going into Sephora to shop; we walked up and down the complex, going into every restaurant asking whether they make chicken tenders.? How funny is that?even when our son isn?t with us; he?s not far from our minds!? We stumbled across a nice Italian restuarant?that had french fries?.jackpot, close enough!

Sometimes we never find something my son will eat but we will still go?to the restaurant.? Never fear?.mama always carries a spare PB&J sandwich in those situations and we have never had a restaurant complain to us about it yet!!!!

5 Life Changes That Affect Car Insurance Rates | Eric Finance

5 Life Changes That Affect Car Insurance RatesWhen it comes to choosing auto insurance, there are countless websites and resources devoted to picking the right policy and getting as many discounts as possible. However, it is important to remember that negotiating your policy rates doesn?t stop once you sign a contract. As your life changes, you may be entitled to further discounts ahead. Read on to learn about the five major life changes that can affect your rates for car insurance.

    1. Moving To New Address

A major factor in determining your insurance rates is your geographical location. Those who live in large cities will typically have greater premiums than someone living in a rural or suburban location. While city drivers are more likely to have their cars stolen or get into accidents, rural drivers are far less likely to be in major accidents and can get discounts for having covered garages for their vehicles, something that reduces the chance of theft and of damage. As soon as you move, make sure you report it to your car insurance company in order to prevent any problems with your policy or with coverage.

    2. Changing Your Place of Employment

Most people would never think to inform their auto insurance company about their change in employment status, but it can actually have a big impact on the monthly premiums you pay. If you first got your policy when driving 100 miles each day to and from work, you likely paid a premium for the higher mileage. Those who switch to part time work, telecommute from home, or retire ought to inform their insurance company right away. With fewer miles driven daily, you could receive greater discounts to your policy overall.

    3. Getting Married
On the whole, married couples are considered to be more responsible and less reckless than their single counterparts. So while your marriage could bring you happiness and love, it can also bring you serious discounts on your auto insurance policy. Call up after your honeymoon to find out if your new relationship status will affect your policy rates at all.

    4. Significant Birthdays

Certain driver demographics are less likely to be involved in accidents than others. The most notable demographic is those drivers who are under the age of 25. Since statistically these drivers are more likely to make claims for injuries or accidents, auto insurance companies charge them higher rates. When you turn 25, be sure to call your insurance provider and request a discount.

    5. Getting Top Grades

Whether you are a teenager in high school or a student finishing your master?s degree, you can get discounts on your car insurance policy thanks to the right grades. Many insurance providers offer reduced rates to their student drivers in high school or in college who are able to show proof of a B average or higher.

Since auto insurance premiums can be quite expensive, it is up to the policy holder to keep an eye out for any discounts that could affect their monthly fees. Each of these significant life changes could alter the amount you pay for auto insurance, so stay in touch with your provider about each one.

Willie Lewis is a freelance writer who blogs about car insurance discounts. If you are in auto insurance, you can compare cheap car insurance quotes at carinsurance.org.uk to save on premiums.
