Nigerian army says 14 die in gun battle with Boko Haram

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigeria's military killed 13 members of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram and lost one soldier on Tuesday in a gun battle in Maiduguri, the group's northeastern stronghold, the army said.

Boko Haram, which is loosely based on the Afghan Taliban, killed hundreds last year in a campaign to impose sharia, or Islamic law, in Nigeria, a country of more than 160 million split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims.

At least 32 people have now died in the northeast in the last week alone in violence presumed to be linked to Islamist militancy, the biggest threat to stability in Africa's main oil exporter.

"One soldier was killed by Boko Haram while the JTF killed 13 Boko Haram," Sagir Musa, spokesman for the military Joint Task Force, said on Tuesday.

The military in the northeast have in the past played down their own casualties in fighting with Boko Haram.

Musa said members of the sect had detonated a bomb at a JTF checkpoints in Maiduguri, and that all the deaths had occurred in the ensuing gun battle.

Maiduguri, a remote dusty town close to the borders of Chad and Niger, has been a hotbed of violence, directed mostly at the security forces, since Boko Haram took up arms in 2009.

Boko Haram's insurgency intensified after Goodluck Jonathan, a southern Christian, was elected president in April 2011.

Jonathan has been unable to stop the rebellion despite waves of military offensives in the northeast and other parts of northern and central Nigeria where Boko Haram has a strong presence.

Western governments are increasingly concerned about Islamists in northern Nigeria linking up with outside groups, including al Qaeda's north African wing.

The Islamist group Ansaru, known to have ties with Boko Haram, appears to have become more active in recent weeks. It claimed an attack on a major police barracks in the capital Abuja last month, where it said hundreds of prisoners had been released.

The group, which has been labeled a "terrorist group" by Britain, has also said it was behind the kidnapping of a French national last week. (Reporting by Ibrahim Mshelizza; Writing by Joe Brock; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

Cebu is fine for most things, and you have St. Lukes in Manila which is good. Like most things in the Philippines, if you want or need anything better than below average, better stay in the US.

Hospitals are allowed to keep you hostage unless you are in a ward until you settle your bill. Hospital charges and all associated costs are based on your selection of your room. If you take a private room, your charges will be more than a ward but less than a suite or semi suite room. There are a finite number of private rooms, and if they are full, your only choice may be a higher cost room. Wards contain about 15 patients and often have 45-60 visitors so rest is out of the question, along with security of your watch, wallet, etc. Here you pay for everything from toilet paper to suture kits. Each cotton ball the nurse uses is charged to you. If the hospital does not have the drugs,supplies,etc. needed you are expected to have someone go buy them and bring them to the hospital. Some hospitals will provide supplies, but at a significant markup. Prescription drugs here cost about the same or more than the U.S. If you walked into a drugstore and paid full price without a discount, you will get a pretty good idea of what they cost here. They are sold by piece, and there are no 30 day supplies for $4.00 like you have in the U.S. IF you can afford to pay for all medical care upfront and expect no reimbursement you might be comfortable moving here. If not, I would strongly advise you to look somewhere else. That IMHO and others might differ.

Facebook security glitch exposes users' New Year's Eve messages

Whew! Facebook saved countless users from?New Year's Eve humiliation ... after initially exposing their private messages.

Facebook's Midnight Delivery app allows users to schedule private messages to wish friends a happy new year exactly when the clock strikes twelve. This is fantastic for those who intend on having a glass of Champagne or five as 2013 approaches, as it will let them schedule a polite message along the lines of?"Happy New Year, my beloved friends!" instead of drunk texting everyone ?something like?"I'm sooooo wasted right nowljskf and happy NEW YeAr! 2013 FTW! YOLO!" when the ball in Times Square drops.

Now great as Facebook's little app sounds, there was?just one problem: A security glitch temporarily exposed users' scheduled?messages to the general public.

The Next Web's?Robin Wauters reports that?when a user scheduled a Midnight Deliveries?message, he or she was presented with a confirmation page. Unfortunately, that confirmation page could be viewed by anyone who happens to guess its URL. "You couldn?t see who sent the messages," Wauters explains, "but you could see all the intended recipients, and the message itself, if you tweaked the URL the right way."

Those toying around with URLs could also see images which were attached to those scheduled massages. And to add insult to injury, they could also delete the correspondences.

"We are working on a fix for this issue now," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News via email. "[A]nd in the interim we have disabled this app on the Facebook Stories site to ensure that no messages can be accessed."

Perhaps the more prudent approach, for the time being, is to just plain type out a "Happy New Year!!!!1!!!" text message and send it to everyone in your contacts at midnight.

Egypt budget deficit expected to widen to 200 billion pounds: agency

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's budget deficit in the year to end-June 2013 could widen by 50 percent from the original forecast made in July, according to a figure released by the planning minister on Monday.

"The budget deficit is expected to rise to 200 billion Egyptian pounds ($31.5 billion) in the current fiscal year unless strict economic policies are put in place to confront it," the state news agency quoted Ashraf al-Araby as saying on Monday.

The 2012/13 budget released in July had forecast a deficit of 135 billion pounds compared to an actual deficit of 166.7 billion pounds for the previous year. Economists at the time said that forecast was optimistic.

President Mohamed Mursi earlier this month suspended a series of planned tax increases as the country prepared for a referendum on a contentious new constitution, which was passed on December 22.

The unpopular measures were deemed necessary to secure $4.8 billion Egypt is seeking from the International Monetary Fund, which wants Egypt to rein in its deficit.

The government said last week it would not implement the measures for at least two more weeks to give it time to explain them to different parts of society.

Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on Sunday he expected talks with the IMF to resume in January.

Al-Araby predicted in November that this year's deficit would be 10.4 percent of gross domestic product, without stating the figure in pounds, up from the original forecast of 8 percent.
