Former Sony Chairman Norio Ohga Dies

Norio Ohga, former CEO, president and chairman of Sony, died Saturday of mulitple organ failure. He was 81.

Ohga is credited with developing the compact disc and helping expand the company into an entertainment and software giant.

Ohga was president of Sony from 1982-1995, and oversaw the $3.4 billion purchase of Columbia Pictures in 1989.

Sony Corp. chairman Howard Stringer said Saturday, "By redefining Sony as a company encompassing both hardware and software, Ohga-san succeeded where other Japanese companies failed. It is no exaggeration to attribute Sony's evolution beyond audio and video products into music, movies and game, and subsequent transformation into a global entertainment leader to Ohga-san's foresight and vision. I offer my deepest condolences on his passing and pray that he may rest in peace."

Ohga, a trained musician, was a consultant before officially joining Sony in 1959.

He led Sony's negotiations with CBS to establish CBS/Sony Records, now Sony Music Entertainment, in 1968. Ohga also presided over the launch of Sony's game business and the establishment of Sony Computer Entertainment in 1993.

Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Michael Lynton and co-chair Amy Pascal said in a joint statement, "Norio Ohga was a brilliant and innovative businessman whose visionary leadership had a profound impact on the way people experience entertainment throughout the world."

Is It Wrong To Celebrate Bin Laden's Death?

A crowd gathers outside the White House early Monday to celebrate President Obama's announcement that U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden.
Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP

A crowd gathers outside the White House early Monday to celebrate President Obama's announcement that U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden.

Impromptu celebrations erupted near the White House in Washington and ground zero in New York when news of Osama bin Laden's death was reported and tweeted.

Laura Cunningham, a 22-year-old Manhattan reveler ? gripping a Budweiser in her hand and sitting atop the shoulders of a friend ? was part of the crowd at ground zero in the wee hours Monday. As people around her chanted "U-S-A," Cunningham was struck by the emotional response. She told New York Observer: "It's weird to celebrate someone's death. It's not exactly what we're here to celebrate, but it's wonderful that people are happy."

Those mixed feelings get at the heart of the moral ambivalence of the moment: Of course there is relief that an evil mastermind cannot commit acts of terror in the future. But is it ever a good idea ? from a spiritual or philosophical standpoint ? to celebrate with beer and good cheer over the death of anyone, even a widely acknowledged monster?

Not 'Our Finest Moment'

The Roman Catholic Church responded to the news of bin Laden's death with this statement: "Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibility of everyone before God and man, and hopes and pledges that every event is not an opportunity for a further growth of hatred, but of peace."

"I think that's on the mark," says Mike Hayes, a campus minister at the University at Buffalo. "As a Catholic Christian, I cannot celebrate the death of anyone, especially when it is done violently. Naturally, my human nature fights against that idealism, especially when I think of those who I lost personally that day and all those who lost their life on 11 September."

However, adds Hayes, who runs the Googling God blog for young adults, "I don't think that the celebrations in the streets were our finest moment as Americans, and reminded me much of the anger I felt at seeing Afghans dancing in the streets at the fall of the Towers on that dreaded day."

Hayes says: "We are called to forgiveness. And that is the only way that we can be truly free. Holding onto our hatred keeps us in slavery to bin Laden's madness and gives the terrorists continued power over us."

There is also a sense of false elation, he adds, "because many believe that the world is a safer place because of this death. That relief is probably misguided."

Is Rejoicing Morally Justified?

Still, some Americans are wrestling with the rightness and wrongness of the party-like responses. A popular status update on Facebook today is a quote attributed to Mark Twain: "I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

On a practical level, some people are concerned that such public displays of elation ? similar to those following a sports victory or a political election ? will create more animosity and even greater danger. "This closes a chapter, but the most sobering aspect of this is that this is not the end," Jack Cloonan, a former FBI special agent, told The Huffington Post. "The reasons they hate us have not subsided, and this could reinvigorate things."

And the question remains: Is there moral philosophical justification for rejoicing over the demise of someone like bin Laden?

"Most people believe that the killing we do in war is justified as the only way to disable an enemy whose cause we believe to be unjust," says Christine Korsgaard, a philosophy professor at Harvard University. "And although it is more controversial, many people believe, or at least feel, that those who kill deserve to die as retribution for their crimes.

"But if we confuse the desire to defeat an enemy with the desire for retribution against a criminal, we risk forming attitudes that are unjustified and ugly ? the attitude that our enemy's death is not merely a means to disabling him, but is in itself a kind of a victory for us, or perhaps even the attitude that our enemy deserves death because he is our enemy."

It is important, Korsgaard says, "not to confuse the desire for retribution with the desire to defeat an enemy. But because terrorism partakes of both crime and war, it is perfectly natural, and perhaps legitimate, to have both of these attitudes towards Osama bin Laden: to think that we had to disable him, and to think that he deserved to die."

The two sentiments should be kept apart, she says. "If we have any feeling of victory or triumph in the case, it should be because we have succeeded in disabling him ? not because he is dead."

NBA Playoffs: Lakers Arrive, But Celtics Dominate

We're nearing the end of the NBA's first playoff round, and the usual suspects are starting to find their comfort zones. Friday night, a trio of Celtics made a statement on the court, as did a couple of previously unspectacular Lakers. This sounds familiar. Host Scott Simon talks NBA playoff basketball with NPR's Mike Pesca.

SCOTT SIMON, host:

Time now for sports.

Nearing the end of the NBA's first playoff round and the usual suspects seem to be getting comfortable. Last night, a trio of Celtics made a statement, as did a couple of previously sleepy Lakers. Boy, that sounds familiar. NPR's sports guy Mike Pesca joins us.

Mike, thanks for being with us.

MIKE PESCA: You're welcome.

SIMON: Now, last night, I mean, the Celtics had New York from the get-go, didn't they?

PESCA: Yes. Unlike the previous two games where New York had been winning in the last minutes of the games only to see the Celtics come back and snatch victory from them, this one was not in doubt.

What is in doubt is if the Knicks are going to win a playoff game for the first time in 10 years, because the Celtics lead that series three games to none. History is not on the Knicks side. Comebacks never been made in the NBA under these circumstances.

And the Celtics do have such a better roster of players, especially because the Knicks traded almost every good player they had a couple of months ago to acquire Carmelo Anthony.

But Carmelo has been the only truly healthy Knick throughout the post season. Chauncey Billups, the Knicks point guard, has been out for almost all the games. And Amar'e Stoudemire, the Knicks center, has been ailing. It has been a mismatch, even though the first two games were close.

SIMON: Let me ask you about the L.A.-Hornets series, because last night, of course, the Lakers won. Kobe scored 30 points. Pau Gasol finally hit double digits. But I really admire the way New Orleans has been holding out. Are they done?

PESCA: No, I wouldn't say they're done, because they did win that first game in Los Angeles. And that was a bit of a statement. But, you know, the L.A. Lakers are the two-time defending champions.

And if you look back at their history they haven't cruised to championships in terms of never losing a game. But they do seem to get the job done. So Gasol had eight points in each of his first two games, but he came on really strong last night. And even in game two, which the Lakers won quite handily, Kobe Bryant really had an off game. But he had a fantastic game in game three down there in New Orleans.

So the Hornets have played well, but when you just look at the two rosters. When you consider the fact that Lamar Odom is the NBA's sixth man and he's such a good player for the Lakers. And the Hornets just don't have a roster anywhere near as deep as that.

SIMON: Memphis is at home tonight against the San Antonio Spurs who are heavily favored. Any chance Memphis can get at least another win?

PESCA: Well, yeah. Memphis did start the series off with a win. It was the first postseason game that they won. Memphis has good defenders.

The big difference in this game is Manu Ginobili, the crafty Argentine who makes the Spurs offense go, who provides spark, provides intensity, always answers the call.

The Spurs had the best record in the west in the regular season. But coming into the playoffs it didn't seem like they were the odds-on favorite because of injuries, but also because everyone sort of takes the Spurs for granted. Now that Ginobili is back they're going to be, of course, a hard out as they say in this postseason.

SIMON: Have to bring this up. Chicago History Museum this week brought attention to the fact that a 1920 court deposition by the Chicago White Sox' Ed Cicotte, the pitcher - these are the guys that were widely believed to have thrown the 1919 World Series. They say, hey, don't blame us - the White Sox -the Cubs fixed the 1918 World Series.

PESCA: Yeah, it was sort of...

SIMON: Why is Chicago considered the second city? I think we lead in a lot of categories. Yeah?

PESCA: Being open to graft, yeah.

I guess the news here is that perhaps the Cubs not only were on the take in a game here or there, but that the World Series against the Red Sox, that was maybe not on the level.

SIMON: But what we Chicagoans call the Curse of the Billy Goat could be the curse of the thrown World Series.

Mike Pesca, thanks so much.

PESCA: You're welcome.

Sony woes continue as SOE confirms data breach (update: 24.6 million accounts affected)

Sony woes continue as SOE confirms data breach
Are you starting to feel bad for Sony yet? No? Maybe this will change your mind. Sony Online Entertainment has, apparently, been the victim of another breach that has, according to Nikkei.com, resulted in the release of 12,700 credit card numbers -- and presumably some other information as well. 4,300 of those credit card numbers are said to be Japanese, but no saying how many are American. Thankfully, data is said to be from 2007, minimizing the number of still-valid credit cards exposed making us wonder if perhaps this wasn't some sort of backup that was exposed. Regardless, SOE's online services were taken offline earlier today and, well, now we know why. We're presently expecting further information from the company but, until then, feel free to continue cowering in the corner and quietly sobbing onto your compromised credit cards.

[Warning: subscription required]

Update: According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony has also confirmed that the latest attack accessed personal information for a staggering 24.6 million accounts. Such info includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, gender, date of birth, login ID, and hashed passwords. Ruh roh. Full press release after the break.

Mark Wahlberg, Justin Bieber in Talks to Co-Star in Movie for Paramount

Mark Wahlberg, left, and Justin Bieber

Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber as co-stars? It could happen.

?Wahlberg on Tuesday told New York Magazine's Vulture that he is talking to the teen singing sensation about doing a movie together.
?
"We?re putting it together. ... We?re doing it at Paramount. We pitched them the idea and, you know, we?re talking about doing it," Wahlberg said. "He loves the idea. He's been sending me video, he sent me a video of himself, and, yeah, I think he?s really talented."
?
A Paramount source said Wahlberg pitched an idea that studio execs liked, and they are talking it through in more detail with the studio and Bieber's camp.
?
Pressed for details about the project, Wahlberg said it will be more of a drama than a comedy but hesitated to be much more specific.
?
"They may announce it fairly soon ? kind of like a reluctant mentor in an inner-city environment. You know, I don?t want to say," he said,
?
Wahlberg, who got his start in showbiz as rapper Marky Mark, added that neither he nor Bieber would sing or dance in the project.
?
Wahlberg most recently was onscreen in The Fighter, for which he earned an Oscar nomination as one of its producers. Bieber made his big-screen debut this year in the 3D biopic-concert hybrid Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
